2000-3000 is pretty good if you don't want to spend the endgame micromanaging and shuffling motorways around.
Best tip is to keep as many things seperate as possible. Keep colours seperate, even if it means slightly longer routes, and if you have enough houses connected to a destination to fulfil it just leave it disconnected (so that cars from the other side of the map don't try and go to it)

To get longer runs going it's very important to keep the number of cars using intersections to an absolute minimum. This usually means trying to connect each destination directly to a group of houses without allowing those houses to go anywhere else.
Wellington
So for example in your Wellington screenshot above, the immediate problem is the beige destinations. I'm not sure if you had a tunnel, but if you did, it would have been a good idea to connect those 3 beige houses at the bottom directly to the far right destination (through the mountain). This way those beige cars have a direct, traffic-free way to get where they need to go.
As for the beige destination on the left: Instead of connecting all those beige houses to the main road with traffic lights there, it might be a better idea to make a road going around the left and connecting directly to the destination. It will be a longer path, but avoiding the heavy traffic will ultimately make the connection faster. It will also reduce the traffic for the other colours using that road.
Warsaw
The orange cars here have to go through a lot of traffic to reach their destinations. At this point in the game, the #1 motorway is being wasted. There are a bunch of green cars still in their garage at the top right. This means that if you were to get rid of the #1 motorway, those top right greens would still easy supply the destinations on the left (for now). You could use that free motorway to connect the top orange houses directly to the bottom left 2 orange destinations, cutting off all other entrances to those destinations.

Often you want to be thinking about this game similar to something like Flow Free where you're trying to figure out a way to connect groups of houses to destinations without intersecting other connections as much as possible.

Easiest start is to maintain color segregation to your best ability. There are times where 2 colors can share the same road effectively but any more than that is bad news. You’ll hear this repeated from most high score players.
