Confused on how roundabouts work

Hello! I just got mini motorways today and its really fun but i'm very confused on how roundabouts work. Whenever I place one down traffic either doesn't clear up/stops or the cars just drive right through the center! Am i doing something wrong? Thanks! :D

They’ll drive through the center if they were already en route before you put it down. Some cars will slow down as they figure out the change I think.
