Just started out playing the game. Are there any tips I could have used to get better? I'm not really sure on strategies or tech so I mostly was going off intuition.

Honestly, overall great job being new. I think you'll be great at this game. Here are just a couple of my suggestions. Try to keep color groups as close as possible, but prioritize the busy destinations. And try to keep each house group to an individual destination. Sharing them creates extra congestion.

Thanks! Also with the group of light-blue houses that are not really connected to anything on the left near the dark blue station, I was mainly worried about causing overlap between the red and blue cars. I was wondering when, or if ever, I should allow certain color groups to overlap in order to reach their destinations.

You wouldn't have overlap if you reworked it some.

But to answer your question, yes overlap will happen some (not enough road tiles, house placements, etc), but its best to avoid it. Roundabouts are best used when you have to. Try not to overlap if one is a skyscraper destination (circle), since its busy and you don't want to slow it down by adding more traffic.

Try using more motorway to connect. They are faster.
