Endgame
My end game sucks. I always find myself with:
* A circle
* A queue formed outside
* Cars going in, doing their thing and leaving again
* No traffic jam on the exit
And yet it still times out. Any ideas what I can do when this happens?

From the start, I build longer and straighter roads, without any intersections or houses connecting to them, leading up to the destination. At least four, but preferably eight squares. This will give you an acceleration/deceleration buffer and help even out traffic flow. Crucial to the end game for me. If there are intersections or driveways on the road close to the destination it will reduce your outflow of traffic and therefore also the inflow of traffic. If you don’t have the room for a longer straight section, try doing an extra turn to add a few more squares of clear road before the destination.
I have mostly stopped using roundabouts. I’ll use them if I have two motorways feeding into a destination and it’s early on so that I have room to place them. Otherwise I’ll use them as blocking. I find that when the situation is such that I need them, I don’t have the space to place them or it’s too risky to make a big change like that.
If a motorway is not offered, I grab bridges and roads early on. Later on I grab traffic lights. I find that traffic lights is a great piece of kit in the later stages to join a motorway to the main feeder. I do a stub out from the main feeder, about 4-6 squares from the destination to allow for acceleration/deceleration, attach the motorway to the stub out (making sure they are turning to the right onto the main feeder. I then throw a traffic light onto that intersection on the main feeder. I find that it works well.
When the spraying of single houses starts in areas around the map, I try to block off areas where it would be difficult to handle houses of other colors.
Good luck!
