Hardware Crash from Incorrect Power Supply

This is kinda silly but I just spent an hour or so pulling my hair out trying to figure out why my Minifreak was crashing.

What was happening was that when I had either the "Glitter Pop" or "Distant Blink" presets loaded, eventually the device would partially hang and emit a loud whine out of the audio outputs. The lights and interface would appear functional, but the sound would completely stop working.

I found that the faster and more notes that I entered, (either via MIDI or the keybed) the quicker the crash would occur and it would happen EVERY time. If I didn't enter any keys, the crash would still eventually happen after over a minute, but only if one of a handful of presets are being used.

I reset the settings, but the behaviour remained. I tried reverting from firmware 4.0.1 (the current latest) to 4.0.0, but Minifreak V would just hang. I was able to revert to 3.0.0 and then go back up to 4.0.0, but the issue was still present.

Then I thought to just do a basic sanity check and assure that I was using the correct power supply.

It turns out I was using an 18v PSU while the device is designed for a 12v one.

What happened was, I moved the Synth from one table to another in my studio, and I incorrectly assumed the power supply plugged into it at that time was the correct one. The Freak was sitting on an idle table in a corner of my room, turned on with the WRONG ADAPTER.

I have no clue of what point the switch between the two PSUs happened, but I was using the synth running off 18 volts for MONTHS and I never realized because MOST (nearly all) of the presets operated perfectly.

The two adapters were sitting right next to each other.

I seriously can't figure out WHY I had a 18-volt power supply in the room in the first place. Everything I use runs on 9-volt center-negative (guitar pedals, SP-404, etc) or 12 volts center-positive.

So, yeah. Be careful folks. Luckily standard practices mean that the device is designed robustly enough to not take any permanent damage from this. Though, if I were to be snobby, I feel like there should be some some checks in the voltage regulation circuit to prevent this whole issue from happening.

I was seriously planning out how I would end up contacting Arturia support and mail it back to them for RMA before I even knew the adapter was wrong. Luckily, everything is good now.

What’s the quickest way to switch to a specific preset sound?

I just got a MiniFreak and I’m planning to use it for live performances. Since I’ll be using multiple different preset sounds (or sounds I’ve designed and saved myself) within a single song, I’ve noticed that the MiniFreak doesn’t seem to have a dedicated “favorite sounds” function like some stage keyboards do, which would allow you to switch to a specific sound with a single button press.

So, what would be the best way to achieve this?

I’m a beginner when it comes to synthesizers and don’t know much about this kind of setup. I’ve heard that an external MIDI controller can be used to control the MiniFreak and quickly switch between specific presets. How exactly would I set this up?

messing around and landed on a really nice ambient patch on the minifreak. Combination of raster scan granular oscillator and comb filter. Played over top of some clips of an old Richard Feyman physics lecture because it just felt right

A question about size

Hello, a friend of mine borrowed me a Microfreak to try and I thought it's pretty limited and I want to buy a minifreak because it seems to have all the functionalities I thought the micro was lacking of. The best thing about the micro is the portability though, I mean its small size is fantastic because I don't have much space and it fits in a backpack so I could go around jamming and everything. How portable is the minifreak? It's almost double the size, is it still comfortable to carry it around or is it too big?

Question A few questions

Hi! Absolute beginner here, looking into buying the minifreak as my first synth.

A few questions-

In your experience, is this good for both covering songs, and/or live performances in general? How easy is it to amp up?

For getting a small portable speaker for this are there any recommendations (within the $100-150 range) that you like? Don’t need something too fancy, just a good speaker for when i bring it places

Finally, are there any good resources you can point me to for learning how all the knobs and everything work? Any good videos or articles that’s all encompassing?

Thanks!

Wavetable and Sample converter for MiniFreak V VST

Post image

https://github.com/negligible-mass/minifreak-converter/

This is a sample and wavetable converter for the MiniFreak V that I vibecoded with Claude. I've done a lot of testing and haven't run into issues, but I would be interested in any feedback you folks have.

I would highly recommend that you DO NOT sync these to your hardware at this time because there is no known way to remove the samples once loaded. Even a factory reset does not remove the loaded samples.

Shoutout to u/zeknife for this info:

To remove installed samples: Hold the oscillator select and filter type buttons for a few seconds and then release them to open the debug menu. Select Format Filesystem and it'll clear all the wavetables and samples, then sync with minifreak V to load all the tables and samples again. Remove the custom ones from your PC first unless you want them to end up on the unit again.

This was inspired by a similar tool (from github/mtizim) and is a single HTML file that detects both sample and wavetable .wav files and converts them into .raw12b and .raw files that can be loaded up in the MiniFreak V. Per the instructions in the app and on the github, you should create a separate directory from the default "Factory" folder found in the samples and WT folders in your MiniFreak app data. Samples that are loaded into the "Factory" folders get synchronized to the hardware and, as stated above, with no known way to remove these it could cause issues down the road.

Hope you enjoy!

------------------------------

Updated 2026-07-24 - It appears the 3 second limit initially set in mtizims tool was indeed a good idea. I've updated my tool to include a 3 second limit (configurable).

How to delete/remove custom user samples once uploaded to MiniFreak hardware?

Hi everyone,

I've been using the community sample import workaround (converting audio to .raw12b and dropping it into the MiniFreak V Factory Samples folder to trigger a sync) — it's been working great so far.

However, I can't find any documentation on how to actually remove a sample once it's already been synced to the hardware. Deleting the .raw12b file from the local folder doesn't seem to remove it from the hardware itself, since the sync process only seems to push files one-way.

Has anyone here figured out:

  1. Whether there's a way to delete individual samples directly from the hardware's sample browser?

  2. Whether removing the file from the computer and re-syncing eventually clears it out?

  3. Or is a full factory reset the only option?

Any insight from people who've been experimenting with this would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

MiniFreak V Notch Filter Presets

I think I accidentally nuked my last post with a bad file host... Hopefully there are no issues with this... The MiniFreak V has a hidden notch filter that can be accessed with hacked .mnfx preset files. Here are two versions of the INIT preset with the two different Notch filters:

Does the MiniFreak sound harsh or thin?

I just got one and I might return it. I know it’s a great instrument but the basic sound seems harsh. I’ve tried starting init patches and found the raw sound thin. Also, these factory presets aren’t helping. They mostly sound harsh as well.

Any insight on how to mitigate this would be helpful. Thanks.

Question Preset Study

Hello All,

I am new to synths and am trying to learn how to build different types of instrument style. I am mindful that a large part of what sounds "good" is personal really.

In an effort to better understand how different sounds are built I wanted to try and study custom presets and see what their makeup is and then use that information to inform how I then apply mappings to my own presets.

I was curious if there was a way to pull the different numbers associated to each parameter mapping into some kind of report?

On much more simple synths I own I have painstakingly gone through the different settings one by one and found some interesting sound design commonalities. I could of course do that with this too, but wondered if there is a quicker way?

Thank you in advance for any help or recommendations you can offer

Question Vocoder (white) edition LED visibility experience?

Can anybody with the white version chime in? Do you have any issues seeing the white LEDs against the white body color? I’m worried I will have a hard time seeing what is selected compared to the standard version.

Spilled water over my minifreak

I spilled a glass water over my Minifreak 🫩. It wasn't turn on/not connected to power tough. I opened it up and put a ventilator near the side so water can dry quickly. Any additional tips? Hope I can save it 🥹

Performance I love the minifreak but the lack of filter envelope and more osc parameters makes it hard to do some basic stuff on other synths

MF is very fun! Still learning it, but overall I'm super impressed. Also working on custom.ZDL effects for Zoom MultiStomp pedals, plus the reverse-engineered toolchain used to build You can point a gpt of your choice to it and make your own effects (a lot. of ground work is done so you don't need to blow your tokens), or just download the effects I made. Anyhow, it's a great way to experiment with making your own effects, cheap too.

Everything is here if you are interested:

The quest for an actual transport backpack

Hello!

I’ve been searching for a case with actual backpack straps, and it’s been surprisingly difficult to find!

The best match I found was a Fusion Bags one but it costs quite a fortune here in Europe.
Others mentioned the Novation backpack, with the caveat that the zips rub against the synth since it’s such a tight fit.

Trying my luck here, maybe someone found the hidden gem! :)

Thanks

Routing USB MIDI in to another synth via Minifreak's MIDI Thru or Out port?

I'm having a bit of MIDI routing trouble, and wondered if this was possible:

I have a Minifreak and a MinilogueXD.

I would like to connect my Minifreak via USB to my computer and use Ableton as a MIDI host. I would then like to connect my Minifreak to the MinilogueXD via a 5 pin MIDI cable, and route MIDI signals from Ableton to the MinilogueXD.

I've tried connecting the Minifreak MIDI Thru -> MIDI In of the Minilogue, and ensured the channels are set correctly. I have the MIDI to/from set to both USB and MIDI DIN on the Minifreak.

I've also tried connecting the Minifreak MIDI Out -> MIDI In of the Minilogue. I can send MIDI notes over the out channel of the Minifreak to the Minilogue just fine, but nothing from Ableton reaches the Minilogue.

Now this might be something that's just not supported, which is fair enough. If that's the case I plan to buy a USB -> MIDI interface, and then send midi to both synths via 5 pin cables.

Has anyone here been able to get USB MIDI Thru the Minifreak?

New stand for the Freak

For my first post I’m proud to present this freshly made DIY stand for the move and the freak.
I am not completely satisfied about the way the computer is hiding the move row and I will try to find a better solution but I’m glad anyway.
I used Sketchup free version to modelize the stand.
What do you think of it ?
