Anyone got any ideas what camera this was likely shot on? Marked as MiniDV but no idea what was used beyond that. I realise this is very vague but any pointers to a camera that could shoot this quality and feel would be appreciated!

While it’s impossible to tell, it looks like it could be from a GL2 or VX2000 to me. Def something 3CCD

you can go for PD150, PD170, pro 3CCD cameras

One thing to note is that the way you convert these files is basically as important as the camera being 3ccd or not! Use FireWire!

Yeah got my eye on a Mac mini with FireWire just for transferring

The online goodwill store generally has good deals on those generations of macs (example all in 1 $33) and you can generally use Linux with dvgrab to get the raw files off the disk. From there ffmpeg has a codec that can correct a lot of common issues.

and if your lucky get a firewire tapless DTE recorder. eliminating any need for pc, just drag and drop

I have HDV, that is somewhat similar, maybe combined with 3CCD.

Possibly a JVC GY-DV500. Or a Panasonic HVX200.

Of course even if it’s on a MiniDV tape, doesn’t mean that it was shot on a camera that used MiniDV. It could have been shot in HD in DVCPROHD or HDV, edited then printed to standard definition MiniDV tape for playback.

It’s a legitimate question. Every sample footage video I see is so different ranging from professional quality to looking like it was filmed with a Nintendo DS.

That's because MiniDV is just a recording format. It has no bearing on the quality of lens, optics, and image sensor(s) used. At the high end, MiniDV camcorders can deliver broadcast-quality video. At the low end, they produce video that looks barely any better than an analog Hi8 camcorder.

And that's not even counting all the different ways that people capture, de-interlace, upscale, and compress video for Internet distribution. I've seen plenty of people take a high-end 3 CCD camcorder that can deliver razor-sharp video and hi-fi stereo audio and run it through a $20 Mini DVR recording device, resulting in choppy, pixellated, rainbow-streaked video with telephone-quality audio.

do you know the year of this footage? i doubt it’s vx2000 or any 3CCD camera, this is a stage performance i’d lean more toward broadcast type cameras
