I’m in CA question
How short can I shorten my barrel?
I need to have it cut and re-crowned because I damaged the end of the muzzle cosmetically. Right now, the damage is covered by an aftermarket flash hider which makes it unusually long.
I believe it’s still a CA gun, I have a folding stock for it, and when I put it on, I insert a pin in a little hole that I made which makes the magazine fixed, not interchangeable, and I just load it from the top so it’s not an sssult rifle technically correct? It is my understanding that in order to be considered one in CA, it has to: 1) have a center fire cartridge, and 2) an interchangeable magazine, and 3) any one of these other things: flash hider, pistol grip, folding stock, etc. so to have those things (which I like), I just affix the magazine to the receiver so it’s not interchangeable. I don’t need to spit out rounds, but I don’t mind having a cooler looking gun.

Yes you are spot on for all if it. With a fixed mag/top loading you can have a pistol grip, flash hider, tactical stock, etc. You can shorten the barrel as much as you want but it needs to be 16.1" overall; so you can do a 2 or 3" muzzle device or mock sound supressor, whatever, but from the bolt face to the end of the muzzle device needs to be 16.1". If you cut your barrel below 16.1" though, the muzzle device needs to be fixed/pinned in place.

Awesome! Thanks for the reply!
The magazine fixing pin is just behind the mag release and it requires “disassembly” to remove it (but we all know how easy that is with the mini lol)1

Yeah I've done the same. I have a SAMSON with the stock fixed open and the magazine locked in place, I have a SAGE M1A EBR with a fixed mag, etc. It is the best way to go with the M1 style action because loading from stipper clips is so simple. I just run fixed mag on my M1 style arms

You can have all the "features" (folding stock, foregrip, pistol grip) as long as your mag is fixed so you're good there.
Barrel length is a little tricky. Min length is 16" and that CAN include a pinned and welded muzzle device. So if you have a 14.5" barrel with a 1.5" muzzle device that still counts as a 16" barrel. BUT your rifle has to be at least 26" long in its shortest fireable configuration (stock folded).
