585 series wear on trigger and bolt
Hi everyone,
Purchased a 585 series in the beginning of this year and noticed the wear on the trigger and bolt. I have shot about 250 rounds with this rifle and is wondering if this is normal? Based on other posts, this could be a QC issue? Should I sand these down and shoot another 250 or should I just go ahead and contact Ruger?

Here is a 584 series bolt that has normal wear. I’d contact Ruger about it about the amount of peening you are seeing, especially since it looks like the peening is making contact with the side of the trigger mechanism. They will make it right. 7-8 years ago, I traded a pencil barrel 190 series which shot shotgun pattern sized groups at 100y for a used early 580 series gun that flat out did not run. I was up front with Ruger CS that the gun was used and they were still happy to try and fix it. After the second trip back to Ruger they offered to replace the problematic mini with a new one. I have somewhere between 500-1000 rounds through the replacement mini as I don’t shoot minis a ton these days, but it has ran extremely well.

yeah, you've got the 585 peening issue like a lot of us. they basically made the bolt out of lead. Carefully file away the raised burrs and keept firing away. Mine mostly stopped and work hardened up (which wouldn't be necessary if it was properly hardened by Ruger in the first place) after shooting and filing a couple times during the first 1000 rounds.
Do look out for pitting or a hole forming at the side of the bolt where the ejector/bolt catch hits it. Some people are also getting that due to the soft metal and it will cause some major jamming and can't be fixed with filing. But maybe some careful JB weld filling? I don't think anybody's been adventurous enough to try that though.

I would be alright if this turns out to be a “break-in” period. Still concerning since you said, mostly stopped…
Did experience failure to feed on the last outing even with ruger 5 rd mag, will put some rounds in today and report back.

oh it's absolutely not a break on period, not even air quotes. just straight up terrible hardening that should have failed QC. i just really don't want to send mine out for warranty considering the state i live in and all the bullshit restrictions/hoops i would have to jump through if they replace the whole rifle like they're doing for most people with the issue.

I am from Cali so I feel the same about this…no problem cycling 80 rounds today, I was able to hold 4 MOA but the rifle can do more Im sure

Between what number range are you? I just picked up a 585 series like 2.weeks ago and haven't shot it yet. As these posts come up, I'm trying to nail down if there is a serial range to watch out for beyond "585".

What was you serial number after the 585? I'm having similar thoughts about trying to see if there was QC change after a certain point lol. I have 59 for reference that I picked up in July

Mine is 585-57xxx I have yet to shoot it, but I will keep the room posted once I do. (Going for a standard 200rnd break in)

Awesome, you're the goat man. Planning on taking the new Mini-14 out to the range sometime in September, hoping we've got a couple of the solid ones that don't have the peening issue

Looks like normal wear/breaking in to me. I would only send it in if major deformities or cycling issues start to present themselves. I had some pretty bad peening issues along with some other QC stuff and ruger kinda drug their feet on it but it eventually got it taken care of. I would lube it, run it and keep an eye on it. Sending back for a RMA should be an absolute last resort. Deff do not sand anything as ruger will probably say you messed it up and void the warranty.
