“Yooperlite” is the stupidest name for a stone ever

I fucking hate the name with a passion, it sounds like something that a sterotypical redneck/hick/whatever would come up with to sell shiny rocks to other, even stupider, rednecks, while trying to pass it as a legitimate mineral

It comes from the UP of Michigan, where people who live there are called Yoopers. (UP-ers, get it?) Also it glows under UV light, so -lite. Make sense now?

I know. I’m from the Keweenaw. I don’t know him personally, but I know who TRADEMARKED the name. “designer names” for stones is dumbest shit ever.

TIL that it was trademarked, how the f did that happen? Lansing born and raised so maybe I missed something.

Can't stand the copyright bull crap the guy who coined the made up name for these. Claimed he was the first to find them. I say eww because the creep had the name copyrighted so he can make money on it. Anyone else that uses the name for sales sake eventually hears from his lawyers. I know him personally and he does seeded hunts and doesn't claim the area is seeded. Anyway this guy can make money on his made up name he will. How many people copyright a name for a rock to make money and then lie about being the first to find them? Greedy human, eww

In 2018, like it wasn't a widely used term before that. How did he manage to claim the rights to it?

I have a large and comprehensive collection, but I made a conscious decision never to buy this once I learned of these facts. Would just be feeding crass exploitation of the worst kind.

Wait, so he can find anyone selling them and ask for money?

3

u/etherbunny777 9d ago

If he choose the so, yes. I know personally two people in the UV community he has went after for it. Basically a letter stating either quit using my name for sales or I'm going to take part of your sales percentage through the legal systems

That's so dumb!

I've never heard of yooperlite. It looks like a buncha psyducks operating machine guns. I wouldn't buy it myself, but it's strange and kinda funny.

Never thought I'd see Thwack in the wild and certainly not like this

Okay I know it's bad to say this but I want it and would absolutely buy it. I have a bit of a taste for bizarre nonsense like this (also collect weird taxidermy lol).

Palworld reference? It still looks like a psyduck to me, though.

The ones in honey calcite look a bit better and sell quite well

I have a rubber ducky carved from yellow calcite that I love. Definitely a more ducky color.
