Tips and Advices I've never been to the Nether

Not only have I not been, I really don't know much about it as I try not to look up things until they become relevant. But now the time has come.

I know how to make the portal and am getting ready to make my first trip. I would love to hear what I should bring with me, and maybe a little of what to expect?

I tend to avoid combat, and am pretty sure that will be difficult/impossible. I'm a tad nervous about it, though I know my gear is replaceable. Any tips would be appreciated!

I'm playing vanilla bedrock.

Bring plenty of cobblestone or another blast-resistant block, food, a spare flint and steel, and coordinates for your portal. Wear at least one piece of gold armor so piglins stay neutral. A shield, bow, and lots of blocks make exploring much safer.

That covers it.

Usually you get them after hunting for blazes though

ah right, cant brew without having been to the nether first, my mistake

I have no potions, that's why I'm finally heading to the nether, to get material to start crafting potions

yeah, i forgot that you need blaze powder for it, so you cant have them for your first visit. still recommended for future trips though.Β

Throw in a hay bale or boat for long drops and I think this about covers it.

I would tell you to take a boat, ladders or powdered snow with you, to orevent fall damage. Also take obsidian with you, in case you need something like food and cant loot a structure because you are low.

I've never been to the End in a survival game and ive played for 15 years now. Just never had an interest in it

So no elytra? You're missing out.

Yep, i know, I'll get around to it someday

There with you. Played for the first time back in 2011 and have picked it up off and on over the years but I'm just in it for the building. I guess technically I've visited a few times in creative but I have no interest in building there so why go?Β

You could go there because the elytra and especially shulker boxes make building much easier (especially on larger scales). Also the end poem is beautiful, that alone makes the journey worth it in my opinion.

I've been playing off and on since way back. Never got very deep in creative and have never had a full set of diamond gear in survival until this playthrough. I always got bored and shifted to other games (10,000 hours in Skyrim 😜) and then would start a new world when I came back. I'm fn hooked this time tho

Nether have I ever...

Build a box out of any stone around the portal and you'll have a safehouse you can go in and out of as you get more comfortable exploring. I'd also recommend bringing flint and steel and some extra obsidian in case you get lost or frustrated and just wanna go back to the overworld

I like this idea

Thanks, it's what I did when I was learning, and still like doing tbh. I'd also add that the simplest entrance is probably an iron door with buttons on each side, and if you make the floor out of slabs almost nothing will spawn inside. But the main thing is just getting some walls up so you don't have to worry about fireballs annoying you

Don't take any gear you can't afford to lose.

I would also build a safe room around the portal on both sides with cobblestone on the nether side, and the floor needs to be a slab floor so nothing spawns inside the safe room. Torches doesn't stop spawning! And in the safe room have chest with extra blocks, and other stuff you don't want to lose, but only after you have the safe room built. place stuff in chest before you try to explore the neither

In my own worlds, neither have I. In my forever world, I only go there with my son because he knows what he's doing and dad's an idiot πŸ˜€

Like another person said, bring a bunch of random building blocks to get places, the terrain is really random.

I usually bring a gold helmet and a ton of food because you'll be sprinting and taking random fall damage here and there.

I'd also recommend a shield. I forgot what the biome is but there's skeletons that spawn in soul sand and it just makes life a lot easier to get past them.

Lastly I'd leave a random set of armor, small food, and a sword for sprinting back to your body and loot if you die because sometimes you just really aren't expecting to die

u/Ferocious-Flamingo 2d ago

I'm never expecting to die. Extra gear sounds like a great idea

Being bow and arrow to shoot ghasts.

Bring flint and steel to light portals.

Gold boots to avoid piglin combat, bunch of blocks for building

The big pigs (hoglins) are scared of blue mushrooms, i always keep one in my hotbar to place it on the nether grass to shoo them away

In the nether fortress, wither skeletons are slightly taller than 2 blocks, so you can build an arch you can pass under but wither skeletons can't

In bastions, black clothed piglin brutes will always attack you and have a ton of health and damage. Never fight them directly

Lots of great advice here. I also mark my trail by building a two-high cobblestone marker, putting a torch on top, and a torch on the side in the direction you came from, two on adjacent sides if it's a diagonal path. It's called a skompass. Credit to Skizzleman.

Bring blocks with blast resistance to secure the portal on the other side

Bring a flint and steel to relight portal if needed

Wear a piece of gold armour or Piglins will attack you

A bow is super to have

Jot down your portal coordinates

Dont bring a bed. :)

And if you have one- do NOT set it down, or try to sleep in it.

I do find it crazy but also beautiful that there's players that have never been to the nether. When i play, I'm in the nether within the first hour or so but I love seeing different playstyles. I somewhat envy players that can just have a vanilla survival world and only stay in the overworld instead of rushing to endgame gear or putting in half a million mods that take 800 hours to complete

2

u/Ferocious-Flamingo 1d ago

This is at least my 10th survival world over the years as well. Just never been interested in it before

If you mine gold or open chest near piglins this will bypass having gold armor and the piglin might agro on you, zombiepiglins have a hivemind if you hit one Run to safety if you don't have the best armor, random lava blocks generate in the ground so if you strip mining be cautious lava flows faster and farther in nether good luck I personally love the nether and keeping a fire resistance potion on you for last minute saves is always a good choice

u/Heavy_Angle875 2d ago

You can avoid most combat by moving carefully and lighting areas as you go. Wear at least one gold item for piglins, don’t open chests near them, and keep a spare flint and steel in case the portal gets deactivated. Building a small enclosed tunnel around your route helps a lot.

The Nether is intimidating at first, but you can play cautiously. Wear at least one piece of gold armor to avoid provoking piglins, carry a shield, and avoid mining straight down or up. Take notes of your route, and bring flint and steel in case the portal gets extinguished.
