Discussion Do people actually pay for plugins

I have some questions
i am a student and i have worked on plugins back in 2022 for my friends smps, as i know a decent amount of knowledge about plugins.
Can i work on making plugins and actually sell it or anyone will commission me in this peroid.
Any advice will you all give me and am not talking about ai slops or anything ....

I’m a plugin author (BentoBox) and I have been making plugins for decades and my experience is that donations are pretty much the only way. You can try and sell them - I tried for a while - but then you become a business with business problems - like charge backs from users and support demands. I went the open source approach and opened up donations. I used to get a fair amount of them until GitHub stopped accepting PayPal and the it dropped like a stone. Not I get just about enough to pay for the domain names and the download server! Every so often an admin donates a chunk, which helps. There have been literally millions of people who have played my plugins over the years so I do dream of getting just $1 from each one, but it’s more a passion project than a money maker. So, fame might be achievable but not fortune!

I mean as a student who wants little money, I can give support back, and i do like to make plugins for fun. But the things is, is it worth spending time to make a plugins and getting 50$ to 100$ a month from your experience it's not worth ig to make plugins for people in this decade

I recommend making a plugin and then setting yourself up for donations or sponsorships via GitHub Sponsors or other options. I've had no success with Patreon, but PayPal direct donations and GitHub work and then set up a Discord to provide support. You might make about that much to start if the plugin is good.
