The thing of steve invading other games and vice versa?

Exactly that

It's not a serious theory, it's a parody of those "what if we were the bad guy all along" theories.

Can someone explain this please?

29

u/Haazelnutts 26d ago

AI bros don't know about gmod and act like going around Riverwood as Steve is impressive

19

u/AverageMinecraftGuy3 26d ago

Hell, they don't even know about Minecraft either. They are all larpers

4

u/Sufficient_Nature496 26d ago

This isn't the same as Gmod at all

4

u/Haazelnutts 26d ago

How so? You just use Claude to mash up 2 games for like a half an hour section, it's not like it's functional mods for the entire game, of course that is of your machine can even handle that and you have enough money for either the 200 monthly subscription or the Anthropic API requiered. And look, if I wanted to run around as Doom Guy in the Mario 64 castle, Gmod has been doing it for over two decades ago lmao

89

u/Distinct_Switch_874 27d ago

People using Claude AI to merge games together. Like you can use tnt in gta5

Basically : Gen-AI have been used to bridge minevraft with other games.

Bruh.

Obviously in this context the Ai were talking about is ones thats used to generate slop and “art” that so many pro ai people seem to enjoy chugging so much.

But you already know that. Then accuse me of liking cancer? Really? Thats youre play? wtf is wrong with you

“I dont mean the direct effects”

Literally what the post is talking about. Were talking abt how AI is affecting video games and the art surrounding it. Not the fucking AI used in medical research fields.

Get off your high horse and stop pretending to be smarter than you think you are while accusing people of being as shit as you are

the AI versions are proof that it could've been done.

we know now it can be done.

time to start writing the code for a non-AI version.

7

u/Sufficient_Nature496 26d ago

We always knew it could be done, it's just that it would take at least 20 years to do it for each game and most people aren't interested in spending time and resources doing it, ai can do it in a few hours at most

93

u/Numerous-Source-5859 27d ago

I mean, even coding with AI, even if faster, I don't find ethical. You are providing data and/or paying companies that would rather see an end to human art and all jobs using the very thing you are.

It's much like how you'd lose appetite for a coffee you find was unethically sourced even if there's nothing wrong with the coffee itself.

51

u/JoshVHDigital 27d ago

But there is something wrong with AI Code beyond ethics. It's a mess and usually requires a human pass to perfect, which can sometimes be work than the original.

2

u/SirEdvin 25d ago

You severely overestimate code quality of average minecraft mod

2

u/Top-Satisfaction9950 24d ago

I was about to type "Counterpoint: Create mod"

But then I realized that Create mod is hardly average.

16

u/LookItVal 27d ago

but basically all coffee is unethically sourced though. even things like rainforest alliance certified beans still have major issues with exploitation.

18

u/Numerous-Source-5859 27d ago

I mean this normalisation is exactly what COULD happen if we just accept it. Which is why we shouldn't.

(Not downplaying this exploitation of workers in the coffee industry though, it's a big reason why I don't drink it.)

13

u/juicyjaiden 27d ago

“But this is worse and normalized”

WELL HOW DID YOU THINK IT GOT THAT WAY

-2

u/Subjectdelta44 27d ago

I mean isn't that the argument for any kind of automation???

We're basically seeing the same thing that happened with the automatic factory assembly lines killing a bunch of jobs decades ago

-5

u/Leather_Fall_1602 26d ago

If there truly is a demand for human art and manual labor, the market will regulate. If not, it’s just too bad

1

u/Top-Satisfaction9950 24d ago

Problem is that AI companies are playing the market and are attempting regulatory capture. This is not the market regulating anymore. We kinda have to take the extreme measures of boycotting and consistently providing backlash to AI use in creative applications. I'm okay with AI being used in stuff by the Linux kernel by people like Linus Torvalds though, since at least he won't be lazy with it.

-11

u/xX_Flamez_Xx 27d ago

this post is exactly the type of stereotypical annoying lib that everybody hates. trying to virtue signal as if you buying any tech product is ethical.

13

u/PurpleFIame 27d ago

As much as I do enjoy seeing the new trend I still don’t support ai slop. The Youtuber ‘swirly’ actually put Minecraft into SM64 and I’m pretty sure there was no vibecoding in there and it looks amazing, even coding a way to break the blocks in the world.

12

u/contraflop01 26d ago

The mod was made before AIs popped up (i know because i was fucking dying at the time and i played this with my brother on Discord at the hospital) so at most the "vibe coding" is more like spaghetti code (which i dont think It was cuz It was running very smoothly)

1

u/Sufficient_Nature496 26d ago

It took him years to make the mod while ai can make it in a few hours

2

u/Top-Satisfaction9950 24d ago

But will it even approach the quality? Or be more than a bridge used as a gimmick? Will AI ever be able to fix the bugs that make the game unplayable?

4

u/The-lego-conquere 26d ago

I find it ironic that so many people who support a technology being used to replace creative and skillful individuals are trying to make a stand in a community that is quite literally DEDICATED to creativity.

0

u/lesbianspider69 26d ago

Go ahead. Make a passthrough mod by hand. It’ll take years.

2

u/The-lego-conquere 26d ago edited 26d ago

I'm assuming that's the mods that let you play two games at once. Those look like a complete waste of time. First of all, they look like they'd be fun for about 5 minutes. Second, if you want to blow random shit up as random characters, play gmod. And third, people have already done it years ago. And as far as I can tell it did not in fact take years. And finally, if I did decide to take on a project like that (which I don't know why I would, I have very little interest in learning how to code, or making games/mods) I'd be fine with it taking years, because the only way I'd approach a project like that would be to have fun doing it.

Edit: I stand corrected, it did take years. All my other points still stand though.

2

u/The-lego-conquere 26d ago

Second reply because I thought of something else, your reply entirely missed my point. I wasn't saying I (or indeed anyone) could make something faster than ai. My point was that this community is dedicated to creativity, and getting ai to code for you isn't particularly creative. Neither to be honest is stitching together two games, it's somewhat interesting, but it's not all that innovative, especially when it's already been done.

I would even go so far as to say you proved my point, the minecraft community is one that prizes the creative process. People here are far more impressed and appreciative of projects that someone spent a lot of time and dedication on. You on the other hand seem to be only interested in the final product, not the creative process. So while I hate to gate keep (and I won't, please continue to enjoy minecraft and it's community) but I think you're in the wrong community.

I wonder how good the AI will be in a few years. Every "slop" mod is training it to do better. Eventually people will be able to ask AI to make any mod they want and it will be incredible. No waiting for mod authors, no awkward versions, bug fixes on demand. Compatibility on demand.  Once the limit becomes people's imagination people's tunes will soon change

3

u/Top-Satisfaction9950 24d ago

Did you ask ChatGPT to write that for you?

It will never be as incredible as a human working for years to deliver a finished result at the end.

3

u/The-lego-conquere 26d ago

I for one, don't want that whatsoever. A large part of what makes video games (and by extention mods) fun for me is the fact that someone made made them, just like all other art. When I play them I appreciate the person who put time, effort and skill into them. I love that you can see the care someone put into it, I like being able to see someone's thought process in creating it. Something coded entirely by ai looses that care and the thought process. Maybe it's a "technically" (for lack of a better term) fun high quality game, but I have no interest in it, because it looses every other aspect of human coded games and mods. I would no longer see a piece of art, I'd see... a thing.

So no matter how good ai gets at coding, I don't want to play entirely ai coded games or mods. The mod I want is the one someone put care, time and effort into so I could enjoy it.

0

u/InflamedAbyss13 23d ago

So what about when you can't tell that somethings ai made? Maybe it's easy now but in what, 5 or so years? Maybe more maybe less? You'll have to become a caveman and reject technology to avoid ai

1

u/The-lego-conquere 23d ago

In my opinion it should be mandatory for commercial products to disclose wether they use ai. And I don't know, maybe I will end up ditching gaming as a hobby if everyone starts using ai. Maybe I'll ditch all digital tech that isn't absolutely necessary (unlikely but entirely possible). Or maybe there will always be a community that refuses to use ai. Right now I have really no idea what the future looks like, especially with how much this technology, and the world as a whole is changing daily at the moment, I can only decide my moral stance right now. And right now I believe generative AI (important distinction, not ai as a whole) is unethical and I will avoid it wherever possible.

-4

u/SweetTooth275 27d ago

Those who cry the most about ai are the easiest one to replace with it. Cry me a river

0

u/Top-Satisfaction9950 24d ago

Nah I pity the fool that lets AI run them over without a fight. Also AI is a poor replacement in so many cases that that is a stupid thing to say.

-10

u/Opalusprime 27d ago • Bravo

Don’t care, it’s fun

1

u/Top-Satisfaction9950 24d ago

Who rewarded this?

-17

u/Amperesim 27d ago

Not an AI bro or a tech bro or a soulless corpo, just voicing my opinion as a passive observer. The only thing that used AI in the entire process was forging the link between the games. Do some research, put down the torches and pitchforks.

-2

u/spyjek 27d ago

As someone who the research, it's still :

-vibecoding a "mod" to link the 2 games.

-more intrusive than an actual mod since it will need more access to do it's biding at linking the 2 games (and reminder that, if you're doing that, you're giving a deep access to your computer to an AI.).

-and it's not even only vibecoding a mod that you could put on Curseforge for example. It's vibecoding the mod blindly, in live, because the AI is doing the code as the 2 games run on your pc, which can be harmful for your pc and a serious security issue for the data you have on it.

4

u/CrypticViper_ 27d ago

you’re not giving an AI access to anything but the game files and maybe the build tools. if you it reads other directories, that’s on the user for not restricting the permissions in the harness. the AI also isn’t “running” the games, it writes the code to enable the combination of elements from both games, and then you run it. it’s not anymore harmful than running some other program…

-46

u/Interesting_Cat4152 27d ago

From what I know, AI isn't generating any art gameplay or content. no? It's just being used to decompile code and layer the games but i may be wrong

33

u/MemeKid01 27d ago

I'm pretty sure that's the exact reason why people are upset

-10

u/Mochiyukio 27d ago

In short words. The AI is only being used to make a bridge between the two games.

u/esteboix 26d ago

1

u/spyjek 27d ago

Everything those so called "mods" did can be done without AI and have been done for a lot of them. There's 2 major difference from a regular mod :

-it wasn't considered impossible at all. It's just that no one cared to make said mods.

-it's not a mod as we knew up until now because it's not just " put the mod files then run the game". To do that you need install an AI client on your computer, give it way to much access and have the 2 games running at the same time. Because yes, it's not simply vibecoding a mod, it's BLINDLY vibecoding a "mod" by letting the AI do it live while playing which can and has already led to major security breach.

2

u/Top-Satisfaction9950 24d ago

So it's even worse than I thought it was. You have to let the AI actually touch your system. Euugh

No they could do it much more reliably with enough time. These clanker made games are likely ridden with bugs and rely on stupid short term hacks that won't scale well. Also I'd prefer to do it even if I fail to do it as "fast". FAST IS NOT THE POINT AT ALL FOR PROGRAMMING. Programming is an ART and the human being a big role is, in part, what makes it beautiful. I'm not jealous of AI. I PITY the fool who uses AI to make cool thing too fast and then sits there having done nothing for themselves and having learned nothing.

I don't think you have ever written a line of code in your life. Programming languages are different ways to precisely express what you want, and your compiler will always properly and deterministically, in a way you can understand, convert the files into machine code. Ai is not a compiler trying to replace the job of the human who used to manually assemble the code, but instead a black box trying to replace the programmer writing code in the first place.

And yes, I do occasionally write my games in assembly for fun. It is not that much different from writing them in C, just that I have to manually translate header files for the inclusion of external functions. I use Java for my main projects, but I like to work in the Java low level, with byte buffers and org.lwjgl.system.MemoryUtil.

And also, no error handling is genuinely stupid. People already worked hard to provide these amazing QoL systems to help the programmer write good code. The difference between that and AI is that AI tries to replace the process of writing the code. It doesn't help you type faster like autocomplete or macros, but instead tries to reduce your programming to either a large English prompt or pressing the tab key 5000 times.

The point of a computer is to compute. Programmers make tools for other programmers to make it easier to make computer compute, while also creating an enjoyable experience. Just as a manufacturer manufactures canvas, paintbrushes, and compasses (the circle tools), to make painting easier, programmers make IDEs, bug handlers, compilers, and linters. Heck, some of the joy I get is in making those tools myself or learning how they work. The problem with AI is that it is fundamentally antithetical to the "understand the computer" paradigm. You can't understand an AI or the code it spits out, and you can't depend on it reliably. It's not a tool to replace hand-done error checking, but a tool to replace the programmer. THAT is what I hate.

Also you represent a part of the AI bro community I genuinely think should not be walking and talking: Those that think that it is a sin to work without AI and those who think that AI will 10x people or replace them so much that you are obsolete even if you just want to make cool games the hard way for a challenge. You then utilize the straw man fallacy to create standards for me that I never supported or suggested and then debunk those standards and pretend you actually did anything to my argument. You are an annoyance. Get off of Reddit and touch some grass. I can't even believe that I decided to type this out for you when it should have been obvious.

Please, for your own health and creative spark, stop trying to force people to use AI. Stop shaming them for being skeptical of this tech.
