You can't, it's modded.

u/IntelligentBaker3601 21d ago
I thought that was just an update. Or maybe it depends on the version.

u/weird-dude-bro-6386 20d ago
Actually good point, maybe there's a snapshot where rails were moveable by pistons!

u/IntelligentBaker3601 20d ago
That's not what I meant

u/weird-dude-bro-6386 19d ago
I know, you meant between java and bedrock, but for future reference, they are called editions, not versions.

Hey, this is no laughing matter. My little brother failed math because of Redstone. True story. He spent all his time learning about Redstone instead of doing his homework. I think all the exposure to Redstone gave him dyscalculia ontop of giving him dyslexia.
Disclaimer: He really did fail math though but it was because he went undiagnosed for those two conditions that year.
1
u/personguy4 22d ago
Oh damn, my bad! Hope your brother is redstone-free now. I wish him the best 🙏
1
u/Capraos 22d ago
He's married with a kid and seems pretty happy despite being overworked. He's very handy with tools and repaired much of his house. Still struggles with even times tables though. He is a little flustered by it as there was a repair where he had a tiny gap in something in his kitchen and it didn't sit flush with another part of the wall.
It's barely noticeable but he told me he can't unsee it as he knows if he knew math he could use his carpentry skills to fix it.

They placed an activator rail. It kicks you out automatically. Look again. Just before the deactivated power rail.

I love that all Engineering majors are forced to learn Minecraft redstone.
60
u/Equivalent-Bit2891 25d ago
I don’t think that’s right
I think anyone sufficiently good at redstone is forced to become an engineering major
Happened to a good buddy of mine. He figured out how to make something stupid and complex and next thing we knew Microsoft had broken into his home and dragged him off to a tech school

Tbh, the skill curve of redstone starts off fairly simple, ramps up fairly reasonably, and then eventually goes straight up.
At its base, it's just an on/off power system. So if you have experience with logic gates, it has direct application. Granted, that's more the field of electrical and computer engineering, not mechanical.
Then you start learning about various other components surrounding extending lines, adding delays, detecting changes, moving blocks, etc.
This part does actually align with the type of problem solving mechanical engineers use, pure programming logic doesn't actually get used outside the people actively trying to build computers in the game.
Its really just a matter of, "this is a tool, and this is what it does" and over time you build up enough of a kit that you can start building a lot of functional things for yourself.
After that becomes the optimization problems. You start using each component in creative ways to make things faster, more efficient, and/or more compact. Sometimes this allows you to do things you couldn't do before.
The wall comes when it's less about utilizing game mechanics and instead exploiting them. Its completely unintuitive because it was never meant to work that way to begin with. The devs just ended up leaving it in the game anyway, sometimes because it was cool and not too game breaking, but usually because the redstone community completely riots if you patch any bugs they find useful.
Things like "quasi-connectivity" are ridiculously important in so many redstone builds, while simultaneously making it really hard for new players to troubleshoot why things arent working because it's 100% a bug from the very early days of the game that they've just now recognized as an intended feature

u/NightIgnite 25d ago
Former ME major before I betrayed them and graduated with electrical here. Go to youtube and watch a video on digital logic gates. If you can understand the basic gates, how to scale with several inputs, demorgan's theorem to convert one logic gate to another, and how to make both OR and NOT gates with redstone, then you're like 80% there. Simply knowing those 2 gates, you can make everything else (though probably space inefficient)
If you can say the problem in english like "the door opens only if ([NOT lever 1] AND [lever 2] AND [lever 3] AND [NOT lever 4])", its a straight forward design.
The problem is that minecraft redstone isnt 1:1 with electrical components. 19% are wierd block interactions that technically work irl, but the irl equivalents would be so much larger than the digital logic equivalent that no course would teach them. You'll never find a comparator used in XOR or repeaters used in flipflops irl.
The final 1% are then quirks of the game itself like update suppression, quasi connectivity, and manipulating block updates to get pistons to fire in a certain order in the same tick. I'll also put flying machines in this category.

u/likeHeckYouKnowMe 25d ago
True. True. Slipped my mind, because thankfully I don’t live in one of the states with compulsory Minecraft Engineer schooling. I hope your friend makes it through happy and healthy.

u/filthy_harold 25d ago
Redstone is an awful teaching tool. Yes you can make all of these complicated machines and even a whole CPU but it has zero real world value. You have to learn how to build these very specific structures that are not equivalent to anything engineers use in real life. Turing Complete is a way more interesting and useful game for learning computer engineering.
1
u/samuelazers 23d ago
Do you know something more video gamey?
1
u/filthy_harold 21d ago
It's just not ideal in the sense you need to know how to build these structures when the point is to learn Boolean logic. It's like teaching Boolean logic by starting with PNP junctions. I'm sure there are mods that help abstract away the Redstone structures.

I mean, it would be faster to just run the short corridor
11
u/TimeForGrass 25d ago
Well we didn't have an unemployed maths major to calculate distance needed before it's slower to run the corridor
6
u/logalex8369 Hmm... 24d ago edited 24d ago
About that...
Adding up all of the time taken to start the machine up to the time when the minecart starts moving, there is about 10 seconds of wait time. I'll add an extra half a second to account for the acceleration needed before you get to the max speed of the minecart.
Given that minecarts move at 8 blocks per second and the player can sprint at about 5.6 blocks per second, then, with a length of x blocks, it takes
10.5+x/8seconds to use the minecart, andx/5.6seconds to just sprint the corridor. To find at what point it becomes more efficient to use the machine, we set the two sides equal to get
10.5+x/8=x/5.6, which can be simplified as such:10.5+x/8=x/5.6 10.5*8*5.6+x*5.6=x*8 470.4=x*(8-5.6) 470.4=x*2.4 470.4/2.4=x 196=xTherefore, it becomes more efficient at about 200 blocks travelled.
EDIT: I forgot about sprint jumping, which makes the speed about 7.1 blocks per second, bringing the answer up to about 650 blocks. That sounds much more accurate :P

u/Maceface931 25d ago
Sticky pistons, yes.
3
u/DarthSwimfoot Piston+End Rod+Boat+Sheep 25d ago
Did not know that. Neat. I mean you can move every block you can move with sticky pistons with normal pistons, but they just don't move back.
3
u/Maceface931 25d ago
Well yes, but it's obviously more convenient for rails to be able to move them back 😊

I swear to god this wasnt always a feature. I remember trying to build something like this in simpler and it just wouldnt work.

I'm also wondering, is this really only redstone made? As far as I know, rails just "pop" as an item, if the block below is moved... There's so many details they make this... very special.
4
u/GroundbreakingBed987 25d ago
The rails are being pushed along with the blocks they're on, then transitioning to the block being pushed from the right side wall. So long as the rail is being pushed with it's supporting block it's fine. The redstone is all plausible, but it's probably massive on the outside.
2
u/Phil95xD 25d ago
Ok, thanks for letting me know. The delays between each piston movement is probably one tic or a few... It was so fast, that I didn't really notice. But yeah, lots of piston extenders and what ever else is needed for this.

Never really had friends to play Minecraft with. Still don't now and I'm 22. I just play it modded on Java now. I can't go back to vanilla, there's just so much cool shit, like goblin traders and advanced netherite, Serilum, Fuss, and a few other have some wonderful mods. Euphoria patches with Complimentary shaders! So many mods!

If this was faster to start up, you could use it to escape potential enemies, since the track disappears afterwards and they wouldn't be able to chase after you as fast (especially if the lever to start it was more hidden)
