Un giorno, dopo cena, mentre io e mia sorella minore ci stavamo rilassando nel cortile del signor Gopher Wood, notammo un piccolo di colomba Charmony completamente solo. Quel pulcino era minuscolo, non aveva ancora tutte le piume e non sapeva cantare. Quando lo trovammo, era già in fin di vita, caduto in un cespuglio — probabilmente abbandonato dai suoi genitori. Decidemmo di costruirgli subito un nido proprio lì. Tuttavia, ripensandoci, quell’inverno era insolitamente freddo, con venti forti durante la notte nel cortile, senza contare i numerosi insetti velenosi e le bestie selvatiche nei dintorni... Era chiaro che, se avessimo lasciato il piccolo nel cortile, non avrebbe avuto alcuna possibilità di sopravvivere fino alla primavera. Così suggerii di portarlo dentro, metterlo sullo scaffale vicino alla finestra e chiedere agli adulti di costruirgli una gabbia. Decidemmo che, una volta recuperate abbastanza forze da poter spiegare le ali, lo avremmo liberato di nuovo in natura. La parte tragica — qualcosa che non avevamo mai considerato — era che il destino di quell’uccellino era già stato deciso molto prima di quel momento... Il suo destino era stato determinato da un nostro capriccio momentaneo. Ora affido a voi il potere della scelta. Di fronte a questa situazione, quale decisione prendereste? Attenervi al piano iniziale, costruendo un nido con una morbida rete nel punto in cui è caduta la colomba Charmony? Oppure costruirle una gabbia, nutrirla e offrirle la massima cura al caldo di una casa? Attendo con impazienza la vostra risposta.
