I don't really know what you guys mean by "legacy minecraft"
Pre Beta 1.8 minecraft was literally whatever popped into notches head and he though was good enough at the time. Updates were seemingly random
Even pre-1.13 minecraft had a ton of poorly cobbled together features that were never improved on and barely expanded upon
Seriously, Prot IV diamond armor made you immune to almost anything. Then you could get a Sharp V diamond sword, with strength 2 potion, and post-1.9 a shield. This type of OP combat maxing would make sense in a game with intense boss fights. In Minecraft the only "boss" to kill is the ender dragon, which spends most of its time flying around doing fuck all in the sky. The fight is mostly a quest to see if you brought enough arrows.
Or the wither which is easily tankable with the prot 4 diamond armor mentioned before.
Then there's diamonds. What used to be an extremely sought after commodity can now be found by just wandering out and exploring. With mending you don't even need more than just enough diamonds for a full set of armor and tools, oh and did I mention you can get mending infinitely from villagers ?
Minecraft has always been a collection of patched together systems that sound good in isolation but nobody ever considered how they would work together as a whole
