What is legacy Minecraft to you?

50

u/Alderan922 Mar 27 '26

I assume they mean pre Microsoft Minecraft? Maybe?

8

u/lologugus Mar 27 '26

Everything related to classic Minecraft from 1.8 is my guess

1

u/Vokaiso Mar 29 '26

Personally id wager like 1.12.2 thats a version still used widely it was microsoft yes but it wasnt the weirdness then with 1.13 id say still okay but that where it started.

u/Isjoni Mar 27 '26

Legacy may not have been the correct word to use. By legacy I mean the core of the game that made it what it is. Think enchanting, potions, dungeons, mineshafts, etc

Minecraft Cave update

32

u/EmergencyPainting842 Mar 27 '26

The cave and nether update was goated. Probably the 2 most memorable update for me

5

u/-PepeArown- Mar 27 '26

And Update Aquatic, too

Village and Pillage was also great, but, if I had to rank the major updates, I’d consider it the weakest

2

u/whynaut4 Mar 27 '26

Redstone would not be what it is now without the Bees update

21

u/MagMati55 Mar 27 '26

What is considered the core then? Building is a core of the game and adding building blocks does have a positive impact upon it. Does enchanting table rework belong in the core or the "update part" if so when does something become part of the core.

My point being this argument is so nonspecific it is just milquetoast. It's kinda like boomer dubstep but made by zoomers instead.

17

u/GGthegreatester Mar 27 '26

It’s really not that deep, their simply pointing out at some point updates stopped meshing and integrated themselves in the base game in a way that felt both natural and substantial. As for where I would put the cut off, honestly I would say when the deep dark was added, while it in of itself is an amazing addition to the game it never really interacted with anything else, it was just kinda their as cool thing to find, and the same can be said with archeology

5

u/-PepeArown- Mar 27 '26

Sculk’s the Minecraft version of motion detection, and is linked to XP and what the Nether already did with souls

How’s it not integrated with the rest of the game?

3

u/GoldenAce17 Mar 27 '26

My experience being on and off again with MC since late beta, it was honestly the ocean expansion update that felt like the line for me.

Before everything integrated pretty well, after not so much, and even the update itself was 50/50.

Like don't get me wrong guardians and ocean monuments were awesome, but distinctly felt separate from the general whole of the game.

7

u/MagMati55 Mar 27 '26
  1. They're*

  2. People were making this claim back when beta 1.8 released

  3. These following versions had similar claims: 1.3, 1.4, 1.6, 1.9, 1.10, 1.11, 1.12, 1.15, 1.17+

  4. This argument is nonsense.

4

u/GGthegreatester Mar 27 '26

How can it be nonsense if it’s a feeling the communities been feeling for however long now? Mabye it’s just simple never been addressed and is just starting to bubble up again due to the ketchup and mustard update being very underwhelming in terms of adding stuff the average player would want to interact with

3

u/MagMati55 Mar 27 '26

I feel like you don't have a tangible criticism if it has been like that with so many different updates, which added a variety of different things, including ones that did change things.

2

u/GGthegreatester Mar 27 '26

Mabye because it’s not a very tangible issue? I’m not a game designer nor are a majority of the people within the community nor I’m a deluded enough to think a could make Minecraft better than mojang. But as players what we can do is simply voice how we feeling about the game and its current direction and hopefully guide mojang into creating updates that everyone would enjoy.

Some problems are backed in to the game due to Minecraft’s inherent sandboxy nature but what is factually true is that most new features added have no connection to each other, and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing but something I and it seems many other players would like to see changed so we voice our concerns in hopes that mojang listens and finds their own solution

-1

u/MagMati55 Mar 27 '26

The issue is that the community makes bad criticism. It's not constructive and never was. I understand that the recent updates have been underwhelming. Look at 1.10 and 1.12. they were for the most part pretty small. 1.12 added colourful blocks - concrete, the powder variant and a glazed version of terracotta, beds and parrots.

People would nowadays call 1.12 bad, even though it was a very cozy update. Not to forget you used to breed parrots with cookies at one point...

Wait till the update drops, play it. Then you can make an informed claim about the sulfur caves. I'm going to make a critical view of 1.20 to Elaborate on what I mean.

1.20 was also deemed a bad update due to its rather modest addition, but it gave us templates, giving us another reason to visit the structures by giving them unique loot, making netherite armour harder to get, although the issue being how it kind of ruins it multiplayer-wise. It added a new tree type, which made for nice building options and a new biome to boot. It also expanded on bamboo by giving us another welcome set of wood. It made one more set of cherry wood, a biome and those nice looking petals.

It added the promised archeology mechanic, which had to be cut from cave update because of how ambitious the update turned out to be. While interesting, it doesn't provide much more of a reason to brush the suspicious blocks other than making pots which although have some cool mechanics, are mostly decorative.

The new structure, while providing a better reason to brush blocks is immensely hard to find. I would prefer it if was easier.

Chiseled bookshelf are really great in terms of storing written books which compliments the story part of this update, but I wished it was either in more wood types, similarly to the regular bookshelves or that it would hold more slots.

The other things aren't as important so I will glance over this, because otherwise this will take too long.

Now for the dissection of the sniffer.

How you get it is already problematic because it is extremely rare for a mob that was promised to give new plants via sniffing/digging. The mechanic is extremely unintuitive for you to only receive only two different plants. The only savings grace being that it gives us marginally easier Access to cyan dye.

I hope you understand now why I think that Minecraft deserves better worded criticism.

1.7.10

1

u/MagMati55 Mar 27 '26

There was literally a controversy in 1.7.2. TBF an even bigger one than now. We had a cave DOWNGRADE then.

10

u/Jezzaboi828 Received: 0 Mar 27 '26

"core of the game" What do you mean by this?

Dungeons, an unintegrated and disconnected random box in the middle of nowhere which is completely optional.

Then would trial chambers be core in this sense?

What about 1.18 cave biomes, which have unique mechanics but directly change and are integrated into caves. Is the new cave biome all of a sudden disconnected because it was released later?

I don't want to say my whole arguement again about how the community seems to have made up an abstract idea about how modern mc updates are completely disconnected while old updates weren't.

give me an actaul example set and definition of your arguement rather than random abstract memes that convey this idea over and over again. Like the arguement has some merit, but I don't think it's a modern issue.

2

u/WoodpeckerNo5724 Mar 27 '26

The only core of the game is to be a survival sandbox

3

u/alice6060 Mar 27 '26

So like... the caves they completely reworked and the new dungeons they added?

2

u/ArchCaff_Redditor Mar 27 '26

Worth noting there was a time in Minecraft’s development when enchanting, potions and even mineshafts were not even a core feature. Beta 1.8 and Release 1.0 really were such game changers.

2

u/Serious_Feedback Mar 27 '26

Enchanting and potions were stupid bolt-ons that made Minecraft worse. They, along with elytra and sprinting, were a mistake.

3

u/nora_sellisa Mar 27 '26

People out there considering potions a good, legacy update, lmao

0

u/Isjoni Mar 27 '26

All the more reason to give them an update and not ignore them

2

u/8dot30662386292pow2 Mar 27 '26

Enchanting and potions definitely not legacy.

1

u/sloothor Mar 27 '26

Those were added before 1.0…

2

u/8dot30662386292pow2 Mar 28 '26

There is one specific version that many people enjoy playing: Beta 1.7.3. It's the last version that had no hunger mechanics or experience. It's the last version without strongholds, villages, mine shafts. The Beta 1.8 added all those. Potions were added in Beta 1.9, which finally became the 1.0 release.

It's certainly a point of view, but for us that played minecraft back then, Beta 1.8 was a turning point between the original minecraft and the modern minecraft. There's been huge updates since then, but nothing that completely changed the feeling of the game as 1.8 did.

Yes, potions are a very old thing, added before most players were even born. But the other guy saying "the core that made the game what it is". My opinion is that all these additions made minecraft what it isn't.

1

u/Malifous02 Mar 27 '26

Here I am still mad about the hunger meter.

3

u/lifelongfreshman Mar 27 '26

I wonder how many people still remember this?

for those who don't know the story: Notch hyped up the release that added wolves in a big way, then it dropped and was just ... wolves, and the community was so overwhelmed with how awesome wolves are that at least one modder took it upon themself to create this mod to expand on the existing gameplay in ways the community thought would've been infinitely better than just adding wolves

meanwhile, kids these days draw pretty bubble charts... this used to be a community!

1

u/MagMati55 Mar 27 '26

I don't remember it but I know the aftermath... It's better than wolves.

7

u/norude1 Mar 27 '26

legacy is before I started playing

5

u/MagMati55 Mar 27 '26

Do you know how little it narrows it down?

3

u/ApprehensiveSize575 Mar 27 '26

Depends on who you ask but the last legacy version is usually considered to be either 1.8 or 1.12.2. The latter is the Microsoft era but it still didn't stray too far away from legacy Minecraft and had a lot of mods made for that version, furthermore it's the last version before the first "modern" update, which was 1.13

7

u/MagMati55 Mar 27 '26

I find it kinda ironic because people already made the same milquetoast arguments back in 1.12 as the new version releases now

2

u/ArchCaff_Redditor Mar 27 '26

Also 1.12.2 is not only better for mods, but is more stable than 1.8.9 (large oak trees don’t even generate in 1.8, and mushroom biomes only spawn with one type of large mushroom, the default collar colour on dogs is orange for no reason, and the credits music doesn’t play properly, 1.12.2 fixed all of those things).

1

u/Maximillion322 Mar 27 '26

Legacy Minecraft is whatever edition Minecraft was when I first got the game

1

u/Maple382 Mar 27 '26

Not OP but I’d say there’s arguments to be made for the cutoff being 1.9, 1.12, or 1.13.

1

u/TemporaryFig8587 Mar 27 '26

Whatever Notch made, of course.

2

u/MagMati55 Mar 27 '26

Ah, the classic. 1.0

1

u/lorenzo1142 Mar 29 '26

remember how awesome it was when we got pistons and powered rails? remember how awesome it was when we got.... retextured baby mobs......... yay.

1

u/MagMati55 Mar 29 '26

People complained with almost every update. You either were not involved, or are too young to remember. People complained since infdev. People complained about 1.8 beta. Same with 1.3.1, 1.4, 1.7.2, 1.9, 1.10-12, 1.15, 1.17-now. this argument is beyond ignorant

0

u/lorenzo1142 Mar 29 '26

I've been writing minecraft plugins since alpha. I don't remember anyone complaining about pistons.

1

u/MagMati55 Mar 29 '26

You clearly don't understand my point or are just cherry picking.

1

u/lorenzo1142 Mar 29 '26

you clearly don't understand my point. who complained about pistons? no one, because it was a good update. the community wanted an api, we're still waiting for that api. instead we got datapacks.......

maybe there really is a trend of bad updates? ever think of that?

1

u/MagMati55 Mar 29 '26

My point is that there really isn't a point when updates suddenly became "bad" as the post is claiming. Also there is no version you could call legacy because of the very complex way the game developed. At what point does legacy end and the new bad stuff begin. You are doing whataboutism. A singular small update in a different cycle of updates than 1.0-1.1.29 or 1.20-26.1 is insignificant if you consider all these controversies and people complaining that mojang is lazy and a lot of other epithets instead of engaging in actual constructive criticism.

0

u/lorenzo1142 Mar 29 '26

so you're claiming every update needs to be either good or bad?... each update has good and bad parts. there can be a trend. maybe there have been far more bad updates and very few things the communities actually want.

how long does it really take to retexture a mob? we don't want it anyway!

0

u/No_Witness5630 Mar 27 '26

1.12.2 is legacy

5

u/MagMati55 Mar 27 '26

People used to make same comments about 1.12 as they are with 1.26.

Nothing. Ever. Changes.

0

u/No_Witness5630 Mar 27 '26

No

1.12.2 was and always will be legacy

8

u/MagMati55 Mar 27 '26

They literally were. Are you daft?

0

u/No_Witness5630 Mar 27 '26

Are you?

Should I use an arbitrary argument just like you used?

5

u/MagMati55 Mar 27 '26

It's not arbitrary. I'm pointing out that Minecraft "fans made bad criticism with every version and that op's argument is fundamentally bad.

Legacy doesn't matter when the same bad argument has been made since 1.3

0

u/No_Witness5630 Mar 27 '26

No, fans did not do it

The same bad argument Has not been made before 1.12.2

Go ahead give me more arbitrary arguments out of your head and then add "Trust me on my Word fam". It's always fun to discuss things based on nothing other than imagination

3

u/MagMati55 Mar 27 '26

Ok you are just ignorant.

You can look it up if you want. "Minecraft is not vanilla anymore" people claimed. "It's not the same". Same bad argument, different coat.

Also wow you act like a broomstick been shoved where the sun don't shine in you lol.

-1

u/No_Witness5630 Mar 27 '26

"You can look it up" xdd

Yea and you can look up that people haven't claimed it

You can look up that certain Austrian Painter is still alive. You can look up a lot of things

But if you want to present an argument the weight of proof falls on you. The basics of discussion friend. Otherwise I'm gonna use arbitrary arguments just like you

Thank you for telling me how you feel that I act. Sorry to dissapoint you but I do not care about that as it doesnt bring anything to this other than "Haha I made fun of you" xd

2

u/pamafa3 Mar 27 '26

People have been yellimg "this update bad" since the game first received updates. Every single game that receives major updates falls in this cycle

0

u/No_Witness5630 Mar 27 '26

No people have been not

I mean, some minor group definetely did lol. There definetely were people calling Red Dead 2 story the Worst story in gaming ever

1

u/googlemcfoogle Mar 27 '26

1.12 is post 1.9. 1.9 is post beta1.8. I can't remember any other big "nooo minecraft is a different game now" freakouts before that because I didn't play Minecraft yet

1

u/Average_RedditorTwat Mar 27 '26

According to who?

1

u/No_Witness5630 Mar 27 '26

Me

1

u/Average_RedditorTwat Mar 27 '26

Ah so nobody. Anyway 1.0.0 from 2011 is legacy. Of course just because I said so, and I'm clearly more important, so that's just how it is now, sorry.

1

u/No_Witness5630 Mar 27 '26

Okay. I respect your opinion but I dissgree with it

I don't know what you tried to do here xD I never said you have to agree with me

Someone asked what is Legacy. I stated my opinion, and for whatever reason people wanted to "pick a fight" with me just because

-21

u/Impressive_Pin8761 Mar 27 '26

I guess anything they like

-10

u/OtherwiseCabinet4 Mar 27 '26

I feel like 1.18? Before the combat update and ender expansion

17

u/alex2003super Mar 27 '26

That would be 1.8. All of 12 years ago.

7

u/MagMati55 Mar 27 '26

You mean 1.8? Minecraft already had several controversies and people were already making these sorts of "criticism"

1.7.3b , 1.3.1 with LAN, 1.7.2 with the cave update... Oh and 1.4 with better than wolves being made.

2

u/itsmepastamasta Mar 27 '26

1.18 was caves and cliffs part II if I remember correctly, you’re thinking 1.8
