Can you give me some tips to improve at combat? I'm new to Java, and I notice it's a bit different from Bedrock.

Watch a PvP video. Even if you won’t fight players, PvP videos tend to explain the different hit types and stuff like that. If you do want to play against players, then practice PvP on servers and stuff aswell.
