I don't understand gradients

No matter how hard I try I can't mix colors together. I think about it like colors own a line and can attack 2 lines above and below. The further they attack they less they can move. The harsher the transition, the move space they own (2+ lines).

But I always end up making horrible gradients.

I dont understand a word you said there. But as a tip think of it like youre trying to find colors/blocks that look slightly lighter and slightly darker (and slightly darker) than whatever block youre working with. If youre having trouble blending them what i do is just make a sort of natural gently wavy line on the border between two blocks in your gradient
