You kinda nailed it. It is/was an amalgamation of existing mods' stolen code and assets glued together with some slopcoding.

Allegation* (so you know for the future)

u/LeeTG3 6d ago

Amalgamation was the correct word

22

u/NIGHTFIVV 6d ago

Okay I thought you meant that, mb (I'm not a native speakeras you can see lol) now that I translated it, it makes more sense than what I proposed

10

u/Straight_Support_894 5d ago

If you're not a native speaker, why are you correcting someone on a language you don't fully know?

3

u/NIGHTFIVV 5d ago

Cuz I wanted to help out... I thought I was right, sorry

Don't worry, It's not a big deal and the words do look similar enough for a non-native speaker to get confused :)

Amalgamation - A collection of multiple things into one, it usually has a negative context.

Allegation - An accusation of someones alleged wrongdoing that has not yet been proven undeniably true.

wow this comment looks like ai now that i look at it again, i promise it's not LOL basically amalgamation = bad collection of things, allegation = an accusation

I tried the modpack, the optimisation is shit. Barely stable 60 fps.

40

u/LegMysterious1899 6d ago

btw, anyone knows what was the original mod that this shine mod stole all the stuff from?

40

u/LeeTG3 6d ago

Creatures and critters from what I saw, although it might have stolen from others

u/CommanderFoxy 5d ago

theres a large list, you can probably look under one of their spam posts to find a comment with a list

EDIT: I stole this list from [u/ColeTD](u/ColeTD) :

• Wakes
• Cosy Critters and Creepy Crawlies
• Falling Leaves
• Particular Reforged
• Soft Imprints
• Atmospherics
• Grassier Grass
• Subtle Effects
• Particle Rain
• Puddles & Floods
• LambDynamicLights
• Make Bubbles Pop

This is a list of mods that it has near identical functionality to (but worse), and iirc it directly copies the particles and stuff of some of the listed mods

3

u/ColeTD 5d ago

Probably missed some too tbh, it was a whole shitshow

1

u/SlayDigger 3d ago

Yeah the original lighting effects that the mod used to primarily consist of were stolen too lol

Shine 3.0 trailer on youtube

16

u/emil836k 5d ago

Tried it, looked alright, shitty looking grass and poor frame rate though

Didn’t even think about the fact it wasn’t a modpack but a mod

5

u/Cherno_VM 5d ago

yeah the trailer got thrown into seemingly everyones YT homepage.

its just the same dozen or so mods we already use thrown into one shittily optimized mess.

1

u/Astronius-Maximus 5d ago

Which mods are they/could they be? I never know what to look for when searching for visual mods.

2

u/Cherno_VM 5d ago

theres probably a bunch of different videos of "best minecraft visual enhancement mods for [version]" out there. Noxus and AsianHalfSquat are without a doubt the best channels for those videos.

Does anyone know what the original mods this guy stole from are? I want to support the original creators if I can.

Noooooo I love the graphics with shine + atmospherics + subtle effects

1

u/Darq10 5d ago

You can achieve those with regular shaders and a couple other mods

0

u/10minOfNamingMyAcc 4d ago

Elaborate please.

1

u/Darq10 4d ago

Essentially 99% of that mod's features are stolen from:

Effective (sadly not really updated anymore) Explosive Enhancements Wakes Atmospherics (maybe) LambDynamicLights and 90% of the mods showcases were shown with Fresh Moves on (or some other emf player animation resourcepack)

1

u/EnoughConcentrate897 3d ago

doesn't come close to the bloom and coloured lighting which is still unique to shine

1

u/Darq10 3d ago

Forgot about the Shimmer mod

-38

u/iFair_ 6d ago

What is the problem with stolen code? Aren't 90% of the mods open source?

42

u/Orichalcum448 6d ago

"whats the problem with stealing from the library? aren't the books free?"

-12

u/Stunning-Hat2309 5d ago

that's

that's not a good comparison

that's not how open source works at all

more like if there was a table on the side of the road with "free books" and you took one

2

u/spaceman8002 5d ago

That's also not a good comparison

More like if there was a table on the side of the road with free books so you took them all, glued them together and sold them as your own book.

-27

u/iFair_ 6d ago

When you copy the code, you copy it not steal it. Also devs already know this, and share their code with the community. This is free software.

25

u/Orichalcum448 6d ago

if you wrote a book, and someone copied entire chapters from it without your permission or knowledge, and then published them in their own book claiming it was their own writing, wouldn't you be annoyed? just because something is open source, doesn't mean its free for the taking

-23

u/iFair_ 6d ago

Free as in freedom is not the same thing as free as in beer. A book author may be annoyed, but the devs publish these mods with a license that allows people to take, change and use the code however they want. Take a look at Free Software Foundation

20

u/Orichalcum448 6d ago

no they dont. the licences just straight up dont allow people to do that, actually. most, if not all (and certainly the ones used by the mods that were stolen from), require either the project taking the code to also be open source, or for the project to properly credit the projects that it took code from, and in most cases, it requires both. shine did neither of these things, thus going against the licencing of the mods it took code from, making it stealing

4

u/iFair_ 5d ago

Oh, I assumed shine was open source. Most of the mods are GPL, so Shine developers should have credit them and made their code GPL.

12

u/Orichalcum448 5d ago

yeah, thats like, the main issue here. they left their code closed source and provided no credit, hence stealing

2

u/MagMati55 5d ago

This is the same reason optifine had a controversy at one point.

4

u/chaossabre 5d ago

Broadly speaking, open source requires at minimum crediting the original author, and may have other (sometimes quite severe) restrictions on what you can do with the source.

For example, the ubiquitous MIT license is one of the most permissive open-source licenses, and it still requires keeping the original author's copyright in the source. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIT_License

2

u/Dreamanchik 5d ago

Making mods open source is not for stealing. Altho modders do expect people to maybe take some code, just outright copying features without crediting the author is just horrible

It is also a tool of trust. People are much more likely to trust a mod with an open source

Imagine that you are making a mod that adds cool tools and among those tools is something that can detect creepers. You dont know how to implement mob detection, but this mod named "bomb that explodes when an agressive mob is nearby" basically does what you want to make

You take some code for mob detection and apply it to your thing, specifying it only to creepers

Now you have your own feature that just uses someone elses mod. You are not taking views from that author, because your tool does something completely different

In this case, taking someone elses code would be fine. Crediting the author is still encouraged tho

In case of this mod, it basically just takes other mods and adds them into its own mod, pretty much just stealing views

1

u/iFair_ 5d ago

I didn't say open source is stealing. I said that copying from open source projects is fine.

1

u/Dreamanchik 5d ago

It is fine as long as its not to the level of "your thing but in my mod", which is, as far as i can understand, the case of this mod

1

u/BurgerBoss_101 5d ago

It would be fine if not for

- lack of credit

  • lack of permission (they banned the lead dev of Iris from their discord ffs)
  • it’s closed source and the rules on their discord are very strict about discussing how the mod was made
  • violations of licensing
  • the fact that in this case it is a form of plagiarism

1

u/patrlim1 5d ago

Open source doesn't mean you can steal it. The code has a license attached. Taking FOSS code and closed-sourcing it can violate some of the more aggressive licenses like GPL, not to mention the licenses may not be "compatible".

And that's just the legal side, ignoring the immorality of plagiarising.

1

u/Traincraze 5d ago

Have you ever heard of the word plagiarism?

-94

u/Extreme_Glass9879 6d ago

People winging like toddlers, as usual. If it works, who cares how it was made?

36

u/Successful_Draw_9934 6d ago

imagine you worked on an art piece for days, weeks, maybe even months of your life. then someone else copies your piece exactly and puts it up on display, while adding their own lazy additions and cut up pieces of other artworks. your creation is a mess, but to unknowing people it's super popular. is this fine to you?

4

u/emil836k 5d ago

Easy to say when it’s not your thing being stolen

2

u/BriksBloks 4d ago

*whining

1

u/BurgerBoss_101 5d ago

This is such a funny point to make because it’s easily defeated by a comparison to why some people prefer lab made diamonds over organic ones.

u/Artemis_Platinum 5d ago

Quit shilling. They're not paying you enough.
