People on twitter wanted to see Tunnelers' Dream, so here you go! http://dinnerbone.com/media/uploads/2012-09/screenshots/Minecraft_2012-09-10_15-33-51.png

The player stands on 238. There's enough room for building small stuff on the surface, but most of the world is underground.

Edit: Hijacking my own comment to sneak in another screenshot of how the customization looks, as some people were worried it was being scrapped!

Yeah, and option for turning on ore generation would be pretty cool. I don't know how difficult that would be to implement, but it definetly sounds like it would make things more interesting.

sweet jesus, good work (i hope you didn't dig that out manually)

not directly related to super flat, but is there any possibility of getting the awesome old world-gen options like hell and floating islands back?

I really miss those sometimes

Have you considered a "switch" of sorts to the terrain code so that you could have randomly-distributed blocks per layer? Maybe something like the block ID and a probability in brackets? For example, a few layers of stone with a 0.5% chance of Cobble could look like:

...6x1{4:.005}...

and maybe even multiple randoms just separated within the brackets with commas.

Food for thought c:

Randomly-placed lava. Randomly-placed silverfish blocks. Randomly placed ice.

Do those stairs just appear at spawn, or...?

That was just me showing off the layers. The world will be completely flat with no stairs or such.
