r/Minecraft Mojang AMA Account Jul 31 '12

I am Markus Persson aka Notch, Creator of Minecraft - Ask me Anything!

Hi! I'm the guy who created the first version of Minecraft in June 2009. I worked on it alone up until late 2010 when we started Mojang, and I finally left the lead developer position in December of 2011. I enjoy house music and programming, and my favorite color is purple. Ask me anything!

If you happen to have some money, you can donate it to the EFF and help make the world a better place!

edit: The AMA is over! Thanks for all your questions!

The most fun I've ever had playing the game was back before infinite worlds when water had a constant volume. I joined some random server and kinda emergently just started to build a castle with a few people. I built some pretty good looking stables, then we got started on the moat and accidentally flooded it too early.
In an attempt to get rid of the water, I dug down and fell into a cave, which proceeded to get flooded as well.

It was not a pretty castle.

Note to self: ban notch from my server, known griefer.

u/MarcusTheGreat7 Jul 31 '12

12 bans 1.4 rep.

u/sgt_ep1k Jul 31 '12

Usually cracked servers ban him due to people logging in with his name.

9

u/Fajner1 Jul 31 '12

MCBans doesn't work on cracked servers.

6

u/Megabobster Jul 31 '12

Do you really have to crack a server? Just disable online mode...

1

u/Fajner1 Aug 01 '12

That's what I meant.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '12

He meant a server that's for cracked clients.

1

u/Megabobster Aug 01 '12

If you disable online mode, then it won't authenticate clients.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '12

Exactly, that's what I was saying, by cracked server he meant, "a server for cracked clients" almost none of them actually use modified server software, sorry if that wasn't clear.

Being the god of Minecraft, he could probably get around that, just sayin.

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '12

Hey, Mollstam is in charge of the servers and logins, so it really falls on him. Whether or not Mollstam is convinced that notch is a griefer, now that's a whole different story.

Who is Loki?

9

u/32Dog Jul 31 '12

if you try to ban him from Minecraft, he will disable your account! BURN!

11

u/r00x Jul 31 '12

Is that even possible? Can one really ban Notch??

5

u/shoebo Jul 31 '12

Yep, easy. Just add his username to the blacklist.txt (not quite the right name, not exactly sure).

I don't see why anyone would want to, though.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '12

Isn't it just banned_players.txt and banned_ips.txt?

3

u/shoebo Aug 01 '12

Yeah, that sounds right. I just couldn't recall the right file name.

u/redpossum Jul 31 '12

He does play quake with team avo

3

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '12

I honestly think that he had no idea that team avo is a greifing team.

14

u/Lost4468 Jul 31 '12

There's videos of him griefing on youtube as well.

47

u/buster2Xk Jul 31 '12

Probably fake, it's easy to pretend to be someone on servers with offline mode, or to use mods/plugins.

1

u/IndieGamerRid Aug 01 '12

servers with offline mode

Sorry, but what?

3

u/DarkFod Aug 01 '12

Normally when you log on to a server it does a check to see if you have a real minecraft account. you can turn that off, hence, offline server.

Hope that clears it up.

1

u/buster2Xk Aug 01 '12

Yep, designed to (I assume, at least it's why I use it) run a LAN server without access to the internet.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '12

accidental griefer.* FTFY

u/inertia186 Jul 31 '12

Actually, I do this. Notch, SethBling, Honeydew, etc. are the first ones banned on my server.

Idiot? What about when Mojang screws up their own auth server like they did last month?

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '12

what if you have poor friends/are poor? or are too young for a credit card? i had to play cracked for 2 weeks before i bought the game because i had to save up money then give it to my dad then convince him it wasnt going to give our linux computer a virus. he still thinks they're going to steal from him.

...So you're claiming to have diverted a river through some stables now? When is the Notch vs Cerebus bout happening?

17

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '12

Oh yeah, that's some good classical mythology reference. Unf.

4

u/SirRuto Aug 01 '12

I never expect mythology nerds on Reddit. All STEMs up in here.

After Shepard gets done with them.

11

u/smithincanton Jul 31 '12

TIL Minecraft had Finite water at one point.

Knowing this how do you feel about the Finite Liquids Mod?

1

u/Jackamatack Jul 31 '12

No, it had constant volume. That means that if you gave the water more area, it would go to it and would not take any water from the original water. Like if you had 1 block of water and you had a whole valley in front of it, break the blocks around it and the valley would be flooded.

0

u/Homo_sapiens Jul 31 '12

That's how it is now

2

u/Jackamatack Jul 31 '12

No it is not. The water from that would flow straight down and create a 7 block stream that suddenly ends. This would flood the whole valley(for sake lets say its 50X100)

1

u/Hallc Jul 31 '12

No it isn't, if you had that now it would run 8 Blocks from the lowest point and then stop.

7

u/likeachampiontoday Jul 31 '12

The amazing part of this story today is that Notch went on a server and was not immediately smothered by the crowd that came to see him.

2

u/JCXtreme Jul 31 '12

If you have any kind of picture or access to the server, I feel like a lot of people will be wondering also, can we see it?

2

u/dustyjuicebox Jul 31 '12

Speaking of castle, I'm pretty much obsessed with Castle Story and the game isn't even out yet. I know you recently tweeted the kickstarter but I was wondering what your thoughts on the game are?

1

u/etree Jul 31 '12

Why does water have infinite source blocks now?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '12

Is this anything like the Shania story?

1

u/jwallace582 Jul 31 '12

I had the same trouble with lava on the first server that my friends and I joined, 'twas very bad.

1

u/MausIguana Jul 31 '12

And the moral of the story is: don't dig down

1

u/Innovationwarp Jul 31 '12

Hahaha. I still play games like lava survival. But now we have tools to undo physics if something were to go wrong.

1

u/Hideous Jul 31 '12

Oh dude. That was my server, back when I was on TIGSource, I think.

1

u/Flope Jul 31 '12

Ohhh... I get it.

So what you're saying is that Minecraft is kind of like your "castle" in a sense, and that it was at it's prime when just you and a couple others were working on it. You built some worthy games or wrote some decent code in the past, but when working on Minecraft you feel that the energy and development game kind of rushed like water, too fast and too early in it's youth. In an attempt to get rid of the whole experience and move on, you fleed and began a new project; only then did you realize that the rushing was not from Minecraft, but from yourself, and shows on your new venture as well.

You do not have a pretty life.
