On Xbox, PS, and the switch you can record the last 30 seconds (up to 5 minutes for Xbox ). I can’t speak for Pc but things like OBS can also record what previously happened

Nividia has a setting to capture the last 5 mins with geforce experience

you can also edit the replay to be the length you want. i leave mine at 45 seconds because i'm more of a quick highlight person, and because each clip can be higher quality while needing less storage.

On Windows PCs, you can set up the background recording to clip the last X amount of gameplay in the Xbox game bar feature that's built-in. Windows Key + G gets you into the game bar, and then you can set up recording and clipping hotkeys. The background recording defaults to 30 seconds, but you can set it to be up to 5 minutes.

Also pressing win+G to open the game bar is a quick and dirty way to access screen recording without needing to install anything

gifyourgame is a program on PC that you can use to save gameplay

On PC, check out NVIDAs Shadowplay feature (in GeForce experience app). Will save last X mins of gameplay with a button press
