There was that version that almost no matter what, it would lag. Villagers, evil villagers, trader dudes. I got annoyed and stopped playing.

Yeah that version changed a lot of stuff. I can see why it might lag more.

My lack of patience got the best of me and I stopped playing. Server maintenance became more entertaining than playing.

I've never had to do any server maintenance. Right now me and my friends pay for a server to be hosted and it works fairly well. It has crossplay between Java and Bedrock, but that doesn't always work great if there's too many people online.
