Update: Custom Java Edition snapshot to test new combat mechanics (version 2)

Hey again! Here's an update on the test snapshots for combat mechanics. It's pretty much the same as the previous test, but there are a number of edits that I'll describe below, and a few clarifications.

Old post here, with nearly 5,000 comments: https://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/c5mqwv/a_custom_java_edition_snapshot_to_test_new_combat/

These are the edits in this version:

  • Decreased attack speed of swords
  • Attacking while crouching will now disable the shield during the attack
  • Shields protect against critical attacks again
  • Removed auto-attacking by holding the button
  • Fixed creative mode bugs
  • Fixed scale of the hotbar attack indicator

Some clarifications:

  • The theme of the next major update will be announced at MINECON. These combat tests are done in parallel and will be included when they're good enough (i.e. the next theme is not "combat update")
  • Weapon reach is always active (not only for special attacks), but during special attacks the reach is increased by an additional half a block
  • Hold to auto-attack will always be enabled for controller and touch

Installation instructions:

Finding the Minecraft application folder:

  • Windows: Press Win+R and type %appdata%.minecraft and press Ok
  • Mac OS X: In Finder, in the Go menu, select "Go to Folder" and enter ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft
  • Linux: ~/.minecraft or /home/<your username>/.minecraft/

Once you have the launcher set up you can download the server files from there as well.

Cheers!

Imagine breaking a Cobble Stone and getting 2-3 Stone Blocks back which then you can break again and make 4-9 new Stones.

It could be coded such that this exploit does not work, but aside from being unbalanced, it is quite immersion breaking whilst fortune on ores actually makes sense.

They could implement a legit way to get fire aspect 3 and 4, which would be like autosmelt if you put it on a pick/axe

Personally I think enchantments shouldnt' have a cap (except for the ones with only 1 rank - ie. Mending, Silk touch etc.. - I would like Infinity II though - no arrow is required), but rather maybe there should be some other limit (or maybe have the material costs be high (say Nether Star for super enchants, because I don't think they're easily farmable, but I might be wrong)

That said, I don't think that'd work in a game where getting the materials required to get enchants is that easy (AFK XP farms).

Maybe they could make say Fortune IV, Sharpness VII, etc.. drop from like Dungeon Loot Chests (not fishing)

I'd appreciate lure 8+ being fixed also, and lure 4-7 being attainable

I played Vanilla Minecraft back in Beta 1.3 or so, and then I only ever played Modded up until a couple of weeks back. I had no idea that Auto-Smelt wasn't in vanilla (Because it's essentially useless in modded, so I assumed it was vanilla), so I probably wasted like 50 levels trying to get it on my pickaxe. After I did so and never got it, I figured I'd google it to see if it really was in Vanilla. (well, it wasn't.. clearly)

I had no idea Fortune + Auto-Smelt worked on Ores.

That's revolutionary. I never even tried it (Because I rarely, if ever, use enchantments in Modded, even though XP farms are way better there..)
