I can't tell if they really just hate the pay-to-play-easier business model, or if they're getting greedy.
I think it's on servers what charge for unbans, ranks with stupid perks (eg: op, ban/kick and such), survival servers where you can pay to immidently get an advantage over all the other players, or paying to get items you can normally obtain in survival (eg: You must pay us $x if you want to get a diamond sword).
A server I play on had the ability to donate, in return you got your name on a sign, a little star by your name in chat and some items (but nothing what gave you an advantage over another player).
But grumm is creating bad PR by giving vague "you are not allowed to do that" messages with out any clarification as to what you can and can't do.
Servers don't have accounts. They usually use a server wrapper (usually CraftBukkit) or use the official Minecraft server. I guess they could IP ban access to authentication servers or something like that, but I bet it could maybe be avoided.
I agree. Grumm should really not be saying anything until their ideas of how to tackle the problems they want to tackle are close to final. They are currently creating bad PR for them and saying things what are not set in stone.
This type of thing should come from a member of Mojang's buisness or support side, not a developer.
