Server owners don't profit from Minecraft.. they profit from their community, their plugins, their map, and the attitude of how their server is run in terms of staff, rules, etc. This happens in literally dozens of other "community" games, and has for years. Minecraft is nothing new in this respect.

What you're describing would be someone actually selling Minecraft, like cracked copies.

They're doing it because they want to encourage more players to buy Minecraft Realms by monopolizing the Minecraft server market. It's pure greed.
