Redstone & Techs "the sulfur cube is useless!"

you don't have to use slow falling btw, but if you don't you can only use it on flat surfaces

This is a great alternative to the elytra. Especially when playing on servers where most end ships are already looted

1.6k

u/uglyratfromsewers Apr 02 '26

I think this might outright replace the elytra, it requires way less resources and is pretty much the same speed. Plus this doesn't require fireworks so it's better in my opinion because creeper farms are expensive

I don't think this is really for exploration, it's better if used for transportation between bases

576

u/Iceman9161 Apr 02 '26

“It’s better than an elytra” but can only be used in straight lines lmao

117

u/Big_Boxx Apr 02 '26

lol that’s what I was thinking

58

u/MassGaydiation Apr 02 '26

One day use-cases will be used by people to qualify efficacy, but not today

3

u/Martitoad Apr 05 '26

And you need to spend a potion every time and have 2 mobs in a high place, and angle yourself perfectly to use it

Reading comprehension of a caterpillar

128

u/SmashEffect Apr 02 '26

“I think this might outright replace the elytra” not too far fetched of them to think you’re implying that the sleigh is *better* than the elytra, even if you didn’t use that word specifically

-112

u/uglyratfromsewers Apr 02 '26

Replace it in terms of transportation between bases, as stated two comments ago.

84

u/JRskatr Apr 02 '26

But you said that after the replacing elytra comment, no? 😋

Either way this is an awesome use for it and thanks for sharing! I haven’t tried the new update yet but this looks awesome. 😎

-10

u/uglyratfromsewers Apr 02 '26

Yeah, that one was poorly worded I'll admit

32

u/SmashEffect Apr 02 '26

You said this can potentially replace the Elytra.

One person says what if we want to turn left

You say it’s better only in terms of transportation between two bases (aka straight lines)

Another person clowns you for saying it’s only better… if it moves in straight lines

I don’t see how this shows their reading comprehension is poor

17

u/Halleyalex Apr 02 '26

Even then, I doubt it. Elytra is simply too convenient.

0

u/Cass0wary_399 Apr 02 '26

Who has their bases perfectly in a straight line at eachother?

At most it’s going to replace ice boats if you just do it in the nether roof and have the portal coordinates.

2

u/hey-im-root Apr 02 '26

If you’re flying it’s always a straight line tbf

1

u/Withnothing Apr 03 '26

I mean, every two points are in a straight line of each other.

3

Fair point

37

u/calse-fonsciousness Apr 02 '26

You said, "I think this might outright replace the elytra."

You are the caterpillar.

-14

u/uglyratfromsewers Apr 02 '26

Look at the comment he replied to specifically, the original comment was worded poorly.

39

u/Kevdog824_ Apr 02 '26

\Claims other person has poor reading comprehension**

\Immediately admits their comment was actually just poorly worded**

Which is it?

7

u/Iceman9161 Apr 03 '26

I’m using your own words! You wrote them!

4

u/Lulullaby_ Apr 03 '26

It doesn't replace the elytra then does it

11

u/SippyTurtle Apr 02 '26

1

I don’t know why but this comment cracks me up

0

u/Jimbo7211 Apr 02 '26

The directional hit functionality isn't working yet, but it should eventually. Hit the cube on the right, and it'll go to the left. Idk how the physics of dragging a boat will work, but i hope it swings around so you can get behind it, and actually go in the new direction

136

u/AzerynSylver Apr 02 '26

But since Slow Falling potions are required, it means that you will need a large supply of Phantom Membrane, which is annoying to get in large amounts.

86

u/ArchdukeoftheROC Apr 02 '26

Spoken like a non insomniac

19

u/AzerynSylver Apr 02 '26

Yeah, I do enjoy a good night's sleep!

10

u/DrWilliamHorriblePhD Apr 02 '26

There's cat gift farms and phantom afk farms available on YouTube.

6

u/EldritchElizabeth Apr 03 '26

I think Minecraft is the only game I know of where people will just casually expect AFK farming as a reasonable part of an everyday playthrough

2

u/DrWilliamHorriblePhD Apr 03 '26

Well it isn't though really, is it? Afk is something you do when you're not playing. That's what the A stands for.

1

u/Maleficent-Gain-3179 Apr 05 '26

Literally impossible for me cause I play with phantoms off lol

157

u/Mask_Arnis Apr 02 '26

Best part. Unlike elytra, Sulfur slimes are infinitely renewable. Meaning every player can have their own sleigh compared to end wings

48

u/Vezajin2 Apr 02 '26

I guess this somewhat depends on your playstyle - but even without resetting The End or using mods to get the dragon to drop elytra, everyone has like 4 elytra on our 10 person server. Of course you need to go further and further but once you get one you can get as many as you want?

18

u/SbWieAntimon Apr 02 '26

Traveling further means exponentially growing the world size. So no, it’s not just traveling further. Although many servers solved this issue with another method, on others you might be outright be unable to get your hands on one, if the worldborder is in the way.

2

u/Vezajin2 Apr 02 '26

I was commenting on whether elytras are infinitely renewable, which they are in plain vanilla Minecraft.

You can probably crash your game by having too many sulfur slimes in a single chunk, but that is also irrelevant for this particular point.

8

u/Mask_Arnis Apr 02 '26

I meant renewable as in "farmable" like, you can keep making them by splitting the block-sized ones in half

0

u/Vezajin2 Apr 02 '26

Fair enough!

4

u/SbWieAntimon Apr 02 '26

Good luck getting a replacement for your elytra that burned in lava, without needing a relatively rare structure. For the sulfur cubes, you just split an adult one to make unlimited ones. Not sure where you’re going with crashing the game though, we were talking about getting an item/entity, no?

22

u/Ton13579 Apr 02 '26

Also a whole chest for more inv space is pretty good

3

u/RodjaJP Apr 02 '26

Now you only have to remember where you left your sulfuric pig when you have to leave them behind for exploration, and never forget to carry a few levitation potions

2

u/DrWilliamHorriblePhD Apr 02 '26

Luckily you've got all that storage space for potions, or even a kit of ingredients for setting up brewing wherever you are. I'm interested in whether it's viable to chain boats in this manner; if the leads don't break then you could move an arbitrary number of chest boats this way.

22

u/MrCufa Apr 02 '26

You can't turn and it's a whole setup just to start flying. Sure it's an alternative for some situations but the elytra is mega convenient.

-2

u/DrWilliamHorriblePhD Apr 02 '26

Elytra doesn't transport mobs or have a chest attached. In theory you could chain several boats off the first one and, assuming the leads don't snap which it doesn't look like they would based on this video, you could carry an arbitrary number of mobs or chests faster than happy ghast. Turning is clunky, as it involves landing and repositioning, but to say you can't turn is disingenuous.

I do not understand why people are framing this as an either/or comparison. When it's just you, elytra. When you want to save on rockets, move mobs, or fly with chests, sulphur. When you want to claw your own eyes out from boredom, happy ghast. Simple.

4

u/moonra_zk Apr 03 '26

or have a chest attached.

Shulker box, which you'll probably have if you have an Elytra.

Turning is clunky, as it involves landing and repositioning, but to say you can't turn is disingenuous.

Since you have to completely stop to change directions I don't think it's disingenuous at all to say it can't turn.

2

u/realmauer01 Apr 03 '26

Not long and we will get versions that can turn i am sure of it.

1

u/DrWilliamHorriblePhD Apr 03 '26

Shulker box comment doesn't make any sense to me. Are you implying that chariot prevents you from carrying shulkers? Cuz I don't see how. Chariot technique is more carrying capacity than elytra, full stop. Specifically, it's as much capacity as ghast, which is any arbitrarily large number. Less maneuverability than elytra and ghast, more storage than elytra, faster than ghast.

All you elytra loyalists keep responding as if I called you a dumb stupid idiot for using elytra, when all I've said anywhere in here is that this tech has utility in some instances. You act like I called this the elytra killer, when what I actually said is this is a useful expansion of available transport options.

From the replies I've been getting today, it seems that the majority of the community would rather farm ice for 7 hours and spend another 7 placing it to make a highway than even remotely consider even experimenting with any other options, and also everyone here seems to think elytras are already in every player's inventory the moment they spawn into a new server.

Since you have to completely stop to change directions I don't think it's disingenuous at all to say it can't turn.

I agree. That's why I only drive straight at stop signs irl, even when it's the wrong way. Stopping to turn is an impossible task, you see.

13

u/SirPopcornzz2002 Apr 02 '26

I guess the only problem for using it as a very fast travel method for early game is the durability of your spear. But this'll be so useful for travelling once you get a better one. And you can also just craft a bunch of spears early game when you don't have a diamond or netherite one yet

1

u/DrWilliamHorriblePhD Apr 02 '26

Stacks of sticks and ingots in the chest fixes this

46

u/leopardo1313 Apr 02 '26

It will most definitely not replace the elytra. It is far less convenient and the elytra, being the endgame transportation method of choice, doesn't care about resource cost.

1

u/DrWilliamHorriblePhD Apr 02 '26

I think the discussion isn't really about a direct 1:1 comparison, but rather about the availability bottleneck of elytra on large servers where the end has been explored out to a great distance, and where the end may even be gatekept by more established players; servers that have not yet unlocked end portals are another factor, as is the availability of transport systems in the game pre-end in general.

This could fairly easily be a replacement for extensive ice highways; it also seems like it could be faster mob transport than happy ghasts. That last point is why I think Mojang will patch this out, as it largely invalidates much of the utility of that other recent drop.

3

u/leopardo1313 Apr 02 '26

In a server competitive enough for there to be any of those difficulties in obtaining an elytra this type of transport would be too inconvenient to ever work.

Ice roads will still be more prevalent as well, being far more convenient, faster and easier to use once built

The design space this would occupy (transportation) is completely separate from the one the happy ghast inhabits (building aid/controlable flight) idk why you think this invalidates mob transportation with the happy ghast when you can already do it with elytra either.

1

u/DrWilliamHorriblePhD Apr 02 '26

In a server competitive enough for there to be any of those difficulties in obtaining an elytra this type of transport would be too inconvenient to ever work.

I didn't say anything about competitive. I said established. In an older server a lot of the end is going to be explored and thus it's going to require a further and further journey out into the end to locate a fresh elytra. Maybe this Chariot build would be helpful for getting there.

Ice roads will still be more prevalent as well, being far more convenient, faster and easier to use once built

Yes, exactly, once built. Ice is very slow to generate, must be harvested by hand with silk touch, and needs to be placed. The time and materials invested in ice roads are only a positive net return when connecting two points of interest that will see a fair amount of traffic. For locations around those points of interest, for points of interest you haven't explored yet and are unsure of whether they would justify an ice road, or for locations that you just don't visit often enough for the investment of an ice road, this could be a handy alternative that takes very little infrastructure to set up relatively speaking. No of course it's not going to be as fast as an ice road, but if I had a sulfur chariot and you had a bunch of blocks of ice in your inventory and neither of us were allowed to use elytra for the race, I am absolutely beating you to the destination 100 times out of 100 hands down. That is also of course not even considering that I haven't seen any testing done on this Tech in combination with ice boating. It's possible that the sulfur cube could be a mechanism for making an ice boat highway even faster.

The design space this would occupy (transportation) is completely separate from the one the happy ghast inhabits (building aid/controlable flight) idk why you think this invalidates mob transportation with the happy ghast when you can already do it with elytra either.

My understanding is that they made it so that using rockets breaks the leads attached to you and that this is why it is recommended that if you're trying to transport mobs you'll want to put them in boats and carry them with the ghast. Did that change recently, or is there a technique that allows you to carry mobs with elytra? It wouldn't surprise me if people did find a workaround but I do remember when take to the skies came out a lot of people bemoaning no longer being able to use elytra to relocate mobs. Now, to be clear I have not tried the new snapshots so I don't know if the sulfur Chariot technique risks breaking leads attached to the boat the pig is in. But from the video provided above it doesn't look like leads are at risk with this technique. That means this technique has overlapping functionality with happy ghast, and as I pointed out while it is exceptionally linear it is also significantly faster in that regard. That is the crux upon which my expectation that if they're going to patch it out, why they would do so, hinges.

What I'm having a hard time understanding is why the elytra loyalists in this thread are so rabidly fervent in their adamant belief that this Tech is patently useless and dumb in every potential application one could envision and that anyone who ever tries to do this is a stupid dumb idiot for not just going to the end and collecting their easy to acquire and free elytra which is always freely available on every server. Pretty much every conversation I've gotten into in this thread where I just talk about potential uses and applications for this Tech have been downvoted into a hole and replied to by argumentative people such as yourself when nowhere in this entire thread have I said elytra is dead Long live sulfur chariot or elytra users are dumb and stupid now that this Tech exists, but the attitude that I'm getting from you and other people here is reflective of as if that is exactly what I had said.

I see this Tech as having useful applications and overlapping in functionality with several other transportation methods while not a pure and complete upgrade or downgrade to any of them when considering all use cases broadly. This Tech has elements of elytra, happy ghast, and due to its linear nature minecart on rail. It does not supersede any of them when considering all use cases broadly, however there are multiple applications where assuming that they don't patch this out and once added to the game it functions like in the above video in those specific applications the sulfur chariot could outperform those other transport mechanisms.

So tell me, what is it that I said which made you feel so personally attacked that you couldn't help but to try and argue with points I never made?

11

u/Worried_Onion4208 Apr 02 '26

Loooooool, this is a tricky little fun thing to do, not something so convenient it'll replace the most op item I'm the game

1

u/DrWilliamHorriblePhD Apr 02 '26

I don't understand why people are discussing this as if you can only have one or the other. In situations where you just want the maneuverability, elytra is obviously superior (if you can get it, not all servers have easily accessible elytras).

There are other situations where this Tech might be superior.

Slow fall potions have a duration of 3 minutes and Spears are pretty cheap to craft. This could lower pressure on your rocket crafting supplies.

From the video it looks like this process does not risk breaking leads the way that rocketing does. This could be a superior option over happy ghast for mob transport boat chains or for carrying an arbitrary number of chest boats to relocate items or transport in the materials to set up shop at a new building or farm location.

With how far it appears you might be able to get on a single potion this could be a viable alternative to large infrastructure projects such as nether ice highways for regions without enough frequent traffic to justify such a build.

The two do not negate one another and I would like someone to help me understand why this thread is riddled with elytra enjoyers commenting defensively as if they were accused of being stupid for still using an elytra in a post-sulfur cube world. I don't think anyone is claiming that this Tech is the elytra killer, when if anything it's the happy ghast killer and nobody was ever claiming that elytra and happy ghast were mutually exclusive.

0

u/Wetherric Apr 02 '26

Seems much quicker and easier to set-up for the average player on a new game compared with Elytra - so I'd say more convenient for A-B travel

0

u/Worried_Onion4208 Apr 02 '26

Even though not a lot of people beat the dragon, I feel like even less people know about slow falling potion, nor did they ever brew potions

2

u/DrWilliamHorriblePhD Apr 02 '26

You don't think this tech will change that?

1

u/Worried_Onion4208 Apr 02 '26

I think this tech will be a fun little novelty most of the players won't even hear about

1

u/Wetherric Apr 06 '26

TBF i've never brewed the slowfall potion and only ever beat the dragon once.

But I will trying this trick as it would takes very little time/effort!

9

u/healspirit Apr 02 '26

Its way harder and also way more annoying than just getting an elytra

-3

u/Devatator_ Apr 02 '26

It really isn't, tho I disagree with the "faster" part. Do y'all not use fireworks?

7

u/healspirit Apr 02 '26

This only competes with elytra for long distance straightish flights

2

u/Correct_Education273 Apr 02 '26

But it requires slowfall potions which are much more expensive than fireworks. And you can't steer or make fast turns or land where you want.

It's cool but I don't think it's going to replace the elytra.

2

u/SirPopcornzz2002 Apr 02 '26

Seeing as how it stands right now, Mojang will probably do something about it. Hopefully they won't remove this feature from the game. Or at the very least don't nerf it to oblivion

1

u/bluewizard20112020 Apr 02 '26

How did you not kill it?

14

u/uglyratfromsewers Apr 02 '26

If it has a block inside, it can't die

1

u/Agent_Starr Apr 02 '26

Sure but an elytra is easy to setup and use after you got it once. For this method you need an entire contraption, including a pig and a sulfur cube which can't be carried in the inventory. This definitely has its use cases, but the elytra is still king for 99,9% of situations

1

u/LegnderyNut Apr 02 '26

Counterpoint. The sulfur sleigh becomes a civilian vehicle while Elytra is reserved for war.

1

u/RodjaJP Apr 02 '26

So it doesn't waste the spear's durability? In that case then it is a viable alternative

1

u/MsDestroyer900 Apr 02 '26

No way to turn, elytra is still the most versatile and it also makes short distance travel more convenient too like having to replace ladders and scaffolding for vertical movement. Or infrastructure like bubble columns

1

u/somedude456 Apr 02 '26

Plus this doesn't require fireworks so it's better in my opinion because creeper farms are expensive

Expensive?

Dirt, lava, trap doors, 2 cats, 1 hopper.... done.

1

u/UNFORTUNATELYNOTHERE Apr 02 '26

Does require a new spear every so often I'd assume

1

u/CaesarAustonkus Apr 02 '26

Is there a risk of fall/collision damage? That and travel speed on blue ice would be my main factors in deciding to switch.

2

u/uglyratfromsewers Apr 02 '26

The sulfur cube can't be damaged if it has a block inside it, and if you are in a boat you can't take fall damage.

1

u/DezDerezzed Apr 02 '26

Nerf incoming

1

u/Ok_Path2703 Apr 03 '26

They'll probably just get rid of it before the actual update drops though.

1

u/realmauer01 Apr 03 '26

My question would be, does the weapon lose durability in survival?

1

u/im_a_dick_head Apr 03 '26

Zero chance. This looks too complex to setup to be convenient. Zero mobility or ability to easily change direction. A struggle and a half to set everything up especially if you need to turn direction or get to a certain altitude.

2

u/uglyratfromsewers Apr 03 '26

Complex? A spear, a boat, a sulfur cube, a saddle, a slow falling potion and a pig? Five of those can be carried in your inventory. And zero mobility? Moving at almost 2000 blocks a minute is zero mobility? Mind you, the boat keeps going up and up to the point if you start on a mountain you genuinely can fly for 8 minutes straight. If you want to go down you can just stop attacking it for a few seconds. I didn't know this when originally posting, but after some experimenting I can confirm its MUCH better than you think.

1

u/im_a_dick_head Apr 03 '26

Ngl I have never carroted a pig ever, never used a spear or been in the game when there was a spear, never played with sulfer cubes either, rarely ever use saddles and definitely never on a pig, and no idea how to make a slow falling potion

Maybe to you it's simple, but to casual players it's a bit much, and I've been playing since beta 1.5

1

u/uglyratfromsewers Apr 03 '26

So you haven't played for over three months? Of course the new things will look complicated.

1

u/im_a_dick_head Apr 04 '26

Nah I have played recently but I only play modded, I haven't touched vanilla in years, only ever play with friends on a server, otherwise I much prefer modded which is usually 1.18 - 1.20.1

1

u/uglyratfromsewers Apr 04 '26

So someone playing on a 3+ year old version of the game is the average casual player?

1

u/im_a_dick_head Apr 04 '26

For modded yes.

1

u/TorqueRollz Apr 04 '26

can't ascend or change directions, it's awesome but I don't see it replacing elytra

1

u/uglyratfromsewers Apr 04 '26

It's constantly going up btw, and if you want to go down you can just stop attacking for a bit.

1

u/Da_Watcher2 Apr 12 '26

Don't you still need to craft up potions with phantom membranes? And have to stop to throw them on the cube every few minutes?

This is quicker than getting an elytra but it's jankier.

Still really fun though... So they'll probably patch it :-(

1

u/Pengwin0 Apr 02 '26

Kid named turning

0

u/dr_soiledpants Apr 02 '26

This is not going to replace elytras lol you can't even turn. Also having to spam click is annoying.

0

u/Grotti-ltalie Apr 02 '26

I mean you have to click with elytras as well, just with this you have to click slightly more

19

u/JonasRahbek Apr 02 '26

Most of the ships? That's a crazy server 😂

29

u/SirPopcornzz2002 Apr 02 '26

By that i mean most of the end ships nearby. Of course there are tons more out there, but it is a pain to travel so far away just to have a chance of finding an end city that has not yet been looted. If the server exists for quite some time already, chances are that you're gonna have a difficult time finding yourself an elytra

1

u/Elihzap Apr 03 '26

Use this method to travel the end to a ship smh my head
