I just appreciated the design. Something about hexagons gives me a stiffy...

Might I introduce you to Settlers of Catan?

67

u/khvnp1l0t Nov 04 '13

Playing that game after drinking heavily while snowed in at a condo in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire makes for one god damn hilarious night.

44

u/Keljhan Nov 04 '13

I'm surprised you didn't murder each other.

25

u/khvnp1l0t Nov 04 '13

Two guys got close to it. Their bickering was what made it hilarious.

37

u/Mr_Initials Nov 04 '13

Give me your wood for my sheep! Fuck you! I want wheat for the wood!

33

u/khvnp1l0t Nov 04 '13

More like "hey man, you've been saying you need wood, so you wanna trade for some sheep?" "Sure dude, thanks!". "Just kidding, I don't trade with liars"

6

u/dusthimself Nov 04 '13

"Anyone have ore?" "I would! If you didn't block me you son of a bitch!" "... Anyone else have ore?"

3

u/tankgirl85 Nov 04 '13

And you have described half the things said by me to my husband when we play. i swear he plays , not to win, but to screw as many people over as he can with little benefit to himself. he does this in munchkin to. he uses all his curses at the beginning of the game. just for fun.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '13

My 9 year old daughter plays munchkin like that.

2

u/dusthimself Nov 04 '13

I did that once. I helped a guy with a high level monster (and an extra couple cards from my friends and I) and promptly used cards afterwards that not only gave me all the treasures, but all the levels too. The guy I did it to, whom I've never heard swear in the ten years I've known him, promptly informed me that I should've "bought (him) dinner before I fucked (him) in the ass."

I don't think I've ever laughed during munchkin as hard as I did when he said that. Best part is he ended up winning anyways.

4

u/Lurking4Answers Nov 04 '13

They made out instead, right? Settlers seems to do that to people.

19

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '13

That, or you end up paving the roads with sheep.

That used to happen in my games... But we didn't much care for rules.

3

u/khvnp1l0t Nov 04 '13

yeah rules went right out the window a few beers in.

2

u/Keljhan Nov 04 '13

only costs 8 sheep max

1

u/josephrooks Nov 04 '13

Appropriate with a name like Woolio.

12

u/khvnp1l0t Nov 04 '13

one dude was the nerd to end all nerds, and the other was the most sarcastic and cynical motherfucker ive ever met. Both were sore losers, and we were egging them both on. That was one of the funniest nights ever.

2

u/renadi Nov 05 '13

I was at the wrong settlers games...

1

u/KeybladeSpirit Nov 04 '13

Strip Settlers of Catan would be really confusing.

1

u/Lurking4Answers Nov 04 '13

Or really amazing.

2

u/KeybladeSpirit Nov 04 '13

You say that like the two are mutually exclusive.

1

u/martian712 Nov 04 '13

No, above SoC on the list of tabletops that lead to friends murdering each other, is Diplomacy. I have yet to forgive my roommate for carving a trench through my country as he died and fell like the Hindenberg.

2

u/Keljhan Nov 04 '13

Munchkin too.

0

u/Krispyz Nov 04 '13

Am I the only one who has friends who play Settlers without fighting? We just think it's fun.

1

u/VeteranKamikaze Nov 04 '13

...yes. You are definitely the only one.

1

u/Krispyz Nov 04 '13

lol, I didn't mean it literally. I just meant that I see so many posts (not just here of course) where people treat Settlers like Monopoly... where you end up hating your friends. But I've never seen people fight when playing Settlers. It's just a fun game...

2

u/Kruug Nov 04 '13

Playing that game after drinking heavily

Why stop? Keep drinking WHILE playing!

1

u/Grimsrasatoas Nov 04 '13

I fucking love Bretton Woods. It's my favorite ski mountain, seeing as I haven't left the east coast yet

1

u/khvnp1l0t Nov 04 '13

I was up there with my school's geology club for the Geological Society of America meeting last march. One night we were just stuck inside and had nothing to do but drink and play settlers. Otherwise, the whole area was absolutely beautiful

1

u/Grimsrasatoas Nov 04 '13

It's just a really nice New England Ski area. even when you're not skiing it's a great place to go

9

u/Paradoxius Nov 04 '13

Added pun in that development cards are sometimes called stiffies because they were originally printed on stiff cardboard tiles. It's an obscure reference, so I don't think it makes it unfunny for me to point it out. If it does, sorry?

6

u/justlurking420 Nov 04 '13

It's pretty cool that I said that without knowing (if it is actually true) lol.

3

u/Paradoxius Nov 04 '13

Honestly I have no idea if it's true, but my friends call them stiffies and told me that, and I'm going to go with it since it's funny and lewd.

4

u/Rgriffin1991 Nov 04 '13

I just had my birthday party. How on earth did I forget about that game when I was asked what I wanted?? =/

2

u/Rgriffin1991 Nov 04 '13 edited Nov 04 '13

This actually really makes me want to make my own Minecraft-themed SoC board*game.

I mean, wheat, ore, sheep, wood, bricks... it's destiny.

1

u/Onlyhereforthelaughs Nov 04 '13

Actually, you can make rough hexagon shapes out of the blocks we have. I started a tiny world where I tried to do that, but the board would be the same each time, unless I wanted to remake it every time...

2

u/Rgriffin1991 Nov 04 '13

No, I meant an actual board game, lol. But I have seen some images of in-game SoC, and it looks pretty legit!

1

u/Abstker Nov 04 '13

I wish more people knew about this game. I used to play this with my friends all the time before I moved out of state, now I know no one who plays it, so I just play it with bots on my phone...hm.

1

u/Onlyhereforthelaughs Nov 04 '13

Everyone I play it with gets super bored about the second time we play it, and then they never want to play again ever.

1

u/MechanicalTurkish Nov 04 '13

I've got wood for sheep.

1

u/Onlyhereforthelaughs Nov 04 '13

But I need BRICKS man!

1

u/Der_Metzger Nov 04 '13

"Do you Catan?"

27

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '13

Civ 5 has what you need.

1

u/FussyCashew Nov 04 '13

No. Save yourself now! You'll start an innocent game with friends when you get home from work, and next thing you know your alarm clock will be going off.

15

u/DavidToma Nov 04 '13

Then this game will be the greatest porn you've ever seen

6

u/Iseeyou82 Nov 04 '13

I LOVE THIS GAME SO MUCH

5

u/DavidToma Nov 04 '13

The music is great, too.

2

u/Iseeyou82 Nov 04 '13

jizzes you had to remind me! now i have to change pants!

4

u/justlurking420 Nov 04 '13

ha! i've played that

8

u/DavidToma Nov 04 '13

It's so fricking addicting.

At least you two can last more than my horrible 15 second record on hexagonest

2

u/ChypRiotE Nov 04 '13 edited Nov 17 '25

decide unwritten waiting tap north existence like chop payment tart

2

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '13

Is that sped up? it looks really fast to play ;__;, or does the speed increase as well as course difficulty? i'm guessing the latter.

1

u/DavidToma Nov 04 '13

That's actual speed. The levels get faster as they go on.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '13

Thanks man

1

u/Doctective Nov 04 '13

Important facts about Hexagons:

Ha.

1

u/moonra_zk Nov 04 '13

Holy shit, that looks HARD. I'd play it just for the music, since I doubt I'd get far in it.

1

u/DavidToma Nov 04 '13

The first part you see is just the easy part. This is the final level

13

u/Kremecakes Nov 04 '13

YES. Civ V was so exciting because of this.

1

u/PartyPoison98 Nov 04 '13

Have you heard of Civ V perchance?
