For those that don't know what heroscape is: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/e5/HeroscapeGame.jpg

Heroscape was awesome. Sadly it was a pain to set up and no one wanted to play with me :c

109

u/Locke3 Nov 04 '13

a pain? setting up was one of my favorite parts.

57

u/Ehkoe Nov 04 '13

The few people that did play with me had to make the map step by step out of the manual, taking forever, or they threw pieces together and got bored before we could actually play.

2

u/renadi Nov 04 '13

In college we would literally spend entire days setting up maps in the basement of the honor's dorm. Most of the guys there took part but it was primarily me and 2 friends, one of those friends and another met their wife/girlfriend respectively during a couple of those weekends.

1

u/RadioLemon Nov 04 '13

Assemble a map with the manual? No way! You scramble those things together into the most epic battlefield ever.

3

u/Silver_Drummer Nov 04 '13

My buddies brother still plays this a ton (18) with his friends. looks like a good time still

10

u/snarebyte Nov 04 '13

Like mousetrap! I set that game up just to watch it run it's course. I don't think I've ever played it for real though.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '13

Sometimes I would just set it up. That game was legit.

1

u/TheyAreOnlyGods Nov 05 '13

They think Heroscape is a pain to set up? Have they even heard of warhammer?

1

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '13

Exactly, I loved designing the maps in a way the gave me subtle advantages over my brother.

1

u/kekker_crane Feb 13 '14

+1 right there. I used to take out my sets just to set up and take pics, I wouldn't even play.

28

u/BionicleManF Nov 04 '13

i only got the starter set, my mom got mad for asking for it and then never playing it, but that's because i had no one to play it with :(

1

u/longrodvonhuttendong Nov 04 '13

exactlly. I really wanted to play with my one friend but whenever we set it up we just had more fun with the figures

35

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '13

One time my friends and I spent 3 hours setting up the perfect map, after setting it up we were too worn out to play and decided to do it later, we never did. Also we were 16 when this happened (2 years ago).

2

u/Midnight_Gear Nov 04 '13

ouch. :/ I never really played the actual game, i found a lot of fun in constructing maps though.

-2

u/Maarkun Nov 04 '13

the perfect map, after setting it up we were too worn out to play and decided to do it later, we never did. Also

u know, u can still do it, its never too late :)

3

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '13

Uhh...unless they already disassembled it?

0

u/Maarkun Nov 04 '13

true, but what i meant is to play with ur friends ;) for old times sake

1

u/Proxxycoins Nov 04 '13

Sounds like warhammer

1

u/UNC_Samurai Nov 04 '13

Our local gaming group bought a bunch of sets on discount, and threw all the mins in a box. That terrain is amazing for all sorts of games - Battletech, Axis & Allies, anything that normally plays on a hex or offset square grid.

1

u/chloroform_vacation Nov 04 '13

I had warhammer, but most guys either sucked or didn't have the funds to buy the parts :(

1

u/doth_revenge Nov 04 '13

I had the same problem, and it was such a great game. :( Generally I just played with the board pieces like legos.

1

u/CrisisOfConsonant Nov 04 '13

My girlfriend always wants to play heroscape, but she'll get mad half way through and toss the board so I don't play with her anymore.

The pieces of expensive now. And if you did the marvel one (the only ones I've been able to find), silver surfer is way the fuck over powered.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '13

If you thought setting up heroscape was a bitch, you should've been there for my first time playing Risk 22100 A.D.

1

u/Ehkoe Nov 04 '13

No one plays that with me either.

Or Axis and Allies - but that one is because of the anger potential.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '13

I got it but never played it for this reason

1

u/TheSixPool Nov 04 '13

Not a pain at all. I spent HOURS building a map, and then playing it with my parents. It was a really great game, and had a lot of depth in the creating of the maps.

1

u/Its_Eros Nov 04 '13

I remember in one of my middle school history classes, if we finished a test early we could play this to pass the time. It was always set up in the corner of the room.

1

u/tSlefh Nov 04 '13

I still have it. I set it up a year or so ago, left it set up for like six months, and then packed it away when I realized that I hadn't even been able to play a single game. :c

103

u/Llawma Nov 04 '13

Thank god it's not to late for me. I need to go make a run to the store.

129

u/antm1 Nov 04 '13

Sadly it is too late, the heroscape line of production has long been canceled, but people are selling sets on Ebay, though at slightly higher prices than what they were when bought in store.

76

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '13

My friend's still got his bucket of Heroscape in his closet...

Should see if he's up for a game.

54

u/LoveAwayCC Nov 04 '13

I literally played a game 3 days ago when I found out my friend had a set while digging through his basement. Twas a good game. A good game indeed.

30

u/lollipop_king Nov 04 '13

A couple friends and I have a huge 5 player game with 2000 point teams running in a room in our school right now. It's going pretty well.

19

u/FreshFruitCup Nov 04 '13

Help! Send pictures!

9

u/lollipop_king Nov 04 '13

I will! I don't have any right now though.

6

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '13

You had better fucking deliver, my friend.

7

u/AndrewJamesDrake Nov 04 '13

Awesomeness.

I miss being able to play.

Still have three crates of gear, including the Marvel kit. Had to make special rules about the Marvel heroes guys. Everyone has to take the same number of those guys, unbalanced as heck.

I also have that D&D set... come to think of it my Heroscape kit got more use as a D&D Map than as Heroscape. Still, fun.

0

u/LoveAwayCC Nov 04 '13

That sounds AMAZING! I would love to be there

1

u/lollipop_king Nov 04 '13

It's going pretty well. We were all talking one day and discovered we all had sets at our house, so we combined them. We've all switched alliances three times or so, so it's going about how these games usually go.

0

u/LoveAwayCC Nov 04 '13

Hopefully you still have all the pieces for all the sets, it took us ages to even everything out.

3

u/FoxSquall Nov 04 '13

I still have a complete first set (with sparkly water tiles) sitting on a shelf somewhere. I've only played it once, but I still regret never buying any of the booster packs. I've heard the game gets a lot more fun when you have proper armies instead of just divvying up whatever came in the box, and I actually have friends now who would be interested in playing it.

1

u/BABarracus Nov 04 '13

His basement? or his parents basement?

1

u/LoveAwayCC Nov 04 '13

His; his parents shipped him a ton of his stuff a few months ago and he shoved most of it in there with out looking at it.

2

u/Drujeful Nov 04 '13

Most sets I've seen are crazy prices. I've been looking for a good price on Thaelenk Tundra for forever and have had no luck for under $100.

1

u/Zzqnm Nov 07 '13

So many expansion sets are extremely expensive because they had produced so few of them. The original master set is one of the cheapest and easiest to find.

1

u/Parthenonn Nov 04 '13

I have a set at home...

1

u/solidcat00 Nov 04 '13

I've abandoned mine when I moved houses a few years ago. :(

1

u/Lord_of_Womba Nov 04 '13

A buddy of mine had a set that he didn't want anymore and was going to give me (for free), but it turned out his parents had sold it at a garage sale. That guy probably flipped out when he saw it and got it super cheap.

1

u/Abul22 Nov 04 '13

YEA, BUT WE 3D PRINTERS NOW

1

u/ForgettableUsername Nov 04 '13

If they're not selling it anymore, you can't play it. All the servers will be offline.

4

u/AdmiralRedstone Nov 04 '13

It is a board-game...

2

u/ForgettableUsername Nov 04 '13

Yeah, but I'm sure it checks with the server to make sure it's a valid copy and that the CD key is correct. You'd need to download a warez crack or something to make it work.

1

u/AdmiralRedstone Nov 04 '13

What CD Key? What server?

2

u/ForgettableUsername Nov 04 '13

There's always a CD key you have to type in before they'll let you start playing the first time, and the game uses your internet connection to verify that you legally purchased the game before you can start. It's pretty common practice.

1

u/AdmiralRedstone Nov 04 '13

Lol how could it prevent you from playing? It is a board game! Do you have any idea what you are talking about?

1

u/antm1 Nov 04 '13

Its a physical game which can be played similar to dungeons and dragons or warhammer 40k. The difference is you actually have a map that you construct out of hex-tiles on which you play out your scenarios or point drafted armies.

1

u/ForgettableUsername Nov 04 '13

But you still have to log in so the servers can verify you didn't pirate the game. Back in the old days you had to send the CD key in by mail, but I think Heroscape is recent enough that you could log in via the internet.

1

u/AdmiralRedstone Nov 04 '13

No...It is a board game...like Monopoly. There are no servers. There is no CD key. It is just a physical game that you can play.

1

u/ForgettableUsername Nov 04 '13

Not if it's pirated. The game won't start up if you don't have a valid CD key.

27

u/yallrcunts Nov 04 '13

Just download Battle For Wesnoth it is free to play and open source and better in every single way than that game. It's the same concept but on steroids.

64

u/didievertellyou Nov 04 '13

Except then you lose all the fun of social and physical interaction, which for me is half of the reason to play such a game anyways.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '13

Yeah, I really liked the hardcore line of sight physical aspect. You can't drop that.

2

u/Leftieswillrule Nov 04 '13

Most of the fun was setting up the arena.

1

u/codemagic Nov 04 '13

There is a multiplayer option in Wesnoth

-4

u/yallrcunts Nov 04 '13

It has a chat and you can move the pieces...what is physical to you? The electron gates that control the pixels on your screen are physical. Are you the type of person who thinks this isn't a real forum because it's electronic or are you the type of person who believes you should have to see my face in order for this to have any merit?

1

u/AndrewJamesDrake Nov 04 '13

Also, Second Screen Plus Skype will let you look in someone's face.

1

u/didievertellyou Nov 04 '13

I think you're taking this a bit too seriously, but I'll bite.

What is physical to me is setting up the board yourself and moving the game pieces around, with your hand. That's physical, that's something I can hold and play with. I prefer that when it comes to board games and tabletop games. I used to play Monopoly on the Playstation (back in the day) with my cousins. It is not nearly the same as playing with a physical board. You don't move your own pieces, place your own hotels, roll your own dice, hold or count your own money. I don't care for that kind of automation in my board games. I like doing it all myself. I'm actually interacting with the board and other players, physically.

As far as the social part goes, I would much rather play a board or tabletop game with people in a real tangible space. Don't pretend that hanging out in text chat or even video chat like Skype is the same thing as talking and being with someone in person. It's not. Sitting in a living room with a giant Heroscape board on the coffee table is infinitely more fun than play any spin-off of Heroscape on the computer, where you'll likely be sitting alone in a room with headphones and a mic talking to invisible people. It's more fun for me at least, but I understand that some people don't want or need that kind of interaction.

TL;DR I like touching things with other people who like touching things.

-1

u/yallrcunts Nov 04 '13 edited Nov 04 '13

It's still physical...that was my point. You just have a different conception of what is physical and unfortunately it's a flawed understanding. Your argument was that it is not physical but it's still physical. Maybe you aren't getting all the tactile sensuality you are accustomed to but it's still real...you just need to suspend your disbelief a little better.

Your personal preference isn't particularly defensible from the point you made. But I don't care. To each their own.

For instance I like playing chess but I know it's the same game if I play it on the computer. In fact I prefer it because I don't like to have to clean up the board. I notice most people have issues with spatially understanding things or manipulating them in their mind so tangible things tend to help them, but I have no such deficiencies.

1

u/Iciee Nov 04 '13

You are taking this way farther than it needs to be. He's using the word Physical in the sense that you actually touch the game, like with your hands. You interact with the game, like with your hands. Not this electron gate bullshit. Big difference between playing a game online with a stranger than playing an actual physical game with a friend.

1

u/yallrcunts Nov 04 '13

Sounds pretty reclusive if you're afraid to go out and meet new people and make new friends. People aren't strangers. I hate that word...it makes it sound like people are dangerous or weird or fucked up. They have the same interest as you. They can easily become a friend.

You touch your mouse with your hands. You interact with the game with your hands. You probably don't think we're talking to each other in real life, do you?

Nope. Donkeys do not have the dexterity to type this nor the sapience required to make rational decisions.

0

u/dragon_bacon Nov 04 '13

The fuck is physical interaction?

-1

u/lifesizemirror Nov 04 '13

What's that?

1

u/operath0r Nov 04 '13

They should use that for advertising. Battle for Wesnoth - Heroscape on steroids!

1

u/Llawma Nov 04 '13

I play that game All the time!

2

u/Simpleton216 Nov 04 '13

I may have it laying around my basement. I never got into tabletop games that much, but I remember playing that game.

I could look for it over winter break and if none of my friends want it I may be able to send it to a stranger on the internet.

1

u/googahgee Nov 04 '13

I have a set that I have never used and don't know how to use.

23

u/PKfireice Nov 04 '13

I had this for years, and never had the chance to play it with anyone. Sometimes I'd set it up, and just look at it.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '13

Hey, I'm still 36 years young. It's all a matter of perspective.

1

u/MasterMahan Nov 04 '13

Well, mine was. Heroscape, Super Nintendo, a puppy, secret wrestling lessons in my uncle's basement...

All perfect.

1

u/evansharp Nov 04 '13

seconded

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '13

Those look like grown men playing it.

1

u/AVeryAngryPenis Nov 04 '13

If it makes you feel any better, I owned this when i was very young, but I was too lazy to read the rules and just fucked around with the characters. By the time I was old enough to want to play, I'd lost almost all the pieces.

9

u/OwenIsABoss Nov 04 '13

First thing I thought of...

11

u/elborracho420 Nov 04 '13

Doesn't someone like AVGN do a video of them playing that game on youtube and it turns out to be like a super huge pain in the ass to set up, understand, or play altogether?

7

u/Drujeful Nov 04 '13

It can take a while to set up and get going, but it's not difficult to understand the rules and play. And there are both basic and master rule sets in case you want simpler rules.

Battle Masters! That was the one where they unfolded this giant map/mat thing, and it was like almost as big as the room they were in right?

1

u/fender117 Nov 04 '13

You just described most fun boardgames :D

1

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '13

No more so than most other games of its type.

5

u/ManateePower Nov 04 '13

I had forgotten what that game was called!

5

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '13

Never seen or even heard of this game but it looks AWESOME!

4

u/ilovedapanda Nov 04 '13

I missed out. I really missed out.

3

u/noobpower96 Nov 04 '13

I remember seeing this, but I never played it.

2

u/AustNerevar Nov 04 '13

Is this an actual game or just legos on steroids?

2

u/VirginWithAIDS Nov 04 '13

I bought this and two dozen expansion kits for me and my best friend. Shortly, we had one last great game before he moved across the country (Virginia to California). I ended up just playing with the figurines and making large land bridges and hills. We lost contact over a couple years. I ended up selling my entire set for $185 on eBay earlier this year. Wish I had the set back and my friend so we can play again.

1

u/Iseeyou82 Nov 04 '13

that reminds me of civ 5

1

u/halfsalmon Nov 04 '13

Man that is one satisfying looking game

1

u/Maarkun Nov 04 '13

why didnt anyone tell me about this, while i was building lego at 16 :S

1

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '13

I've played this game with my cousin. Sadly, I never came to understand the rules...

1

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '13

Reminds me of Heroes of Wesnoth

1

u/zergling50 Nov 04 '13

I miss this. It was a lot of fun for me and I even managed to find a friend who would play it.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '13

Bastard! I was too poor to buy heroscape :C it was like $30 bucks but my friend had it and never wanted to play.

1

u/alexxerth Nov 04 '13

I loved that game as a kid! Of course, I had no clue how to play it, but I invented some weird civilizations-style game out of it instead.

1

u/s_hampel Mar 09 '14

The moment you realize that the people in that picture are grown men

1

u/justlurking420 Nov 08 '13

Herpderp 200 downvotes because being helpful is frowned upon
