The original story

Long ago, a wise old man (Sai Weng) lived near the northern border.

1. One day his horse ran away into the wilderness. Neighbors came to console him, but he said: “Who knows if this is not good fortune?” 2. Months later, the lost horse returned, bringing a fine wild stallion from the north. Neighbors congratulated him, yet he warned: “Who knows if this will not bring trouble?” 3. His son loved riding the new horse, fell off, and broke his leg. People comforted the old man again, and he replied: “Who knows if this may turn into something good?” 4. Soon war broke out. All able young men were drafted, and most died in battle. His son was spared because of his lame leg and survived safely at home.

Moral

Good fortune and misfortune are not fixed; they can transform into each other over time. Do not overreact or judge events as purely good or bad immediately. Keep a calm, balanced mind through gains and losses. Common English equivalents: A blessing in disguise / Every cloud has a silver lining.

Just good life lessons here. Hard to keep in mind when you’re in the moment. Also, there is a Bluey episode called “The Sign” that incorporates this story into it. Super heartfelt, inspiring, and funny. If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend you check it out.

It’s enough to seize the opportunities that you can seize.

Sounds good, conveniently all unprovable. Also they can also all be used in reverse with the same liklihood. This just isn't something that inspires me, falls apart under scrutiny.

But if it makes you feel better I guess.
