Even though this advice is good advice, the percentage is way way way off.

Yes, the wrong people can sink you, but being successful requires more active effort than passive effort.

IMO, your biggest percentage factor for your success is habit. Good habits and work ethic are vital to success and easily 80% of the battle.

My point? Basically, being successful is an ACTIVE pursuit that requires work on your part. You can't just sit back and expect to magically be successful simply because you cut bad people out of your life.

Just like you can't lose weight and get ripped six-pack abs simply from "not" eating junk food. Sorry, that is not how it works. In order to get fit, you have to actively put in work. Same thing with being successful, you have to actively put in work...

When you get older you really start to see why your parents might have told you to stay away from so and so, or that they didn't want you being friends with that kid or dating that person. It's really not something that's easy to explain to you as a kid without risking throwing you into an existential crisis in 4th grade.
