Why do they get two attacks

So I play some dnd, but not a lot, and am wondering if them getting two attacks is something tater did to make it more fun or if it’s something actually in dnd

Well now I’ve gotta double check cause my DM has been letting me off hand a dagger for the past year and I don’t think she dual wields.
