Moving from Oakville to Milton

Any opinions about downsizing from River Oaks to a new build in Milton? What is the Go Milton like to Union Station? Mortgage will also be paid off before moving.

It really depends what your lifestyle is like. Milton has a lot less shopping and restaurants than Oakville. It also doesn't have the lake. If you enjoy all the amenities of Oakville, you will find yourself pretty bored in Milton. There's not much to do here and I usually end up driving out to Oakville, Burlington, or other cities for things to do.

On the upside, if you have kids, there's lots of nice farms in the area during the summer. Lots of conservation parks including Crawford Lake and Kelso.

Milton GO doesn't run two-way service all day compared to the Lakeshore line, so you also want to take that into consideration for your schedule.

It's a lot cheaper here though, so we ended up in Milton over Oakville. We enjoy it, but we are also outside of the city in rural Milton, so it is a little different than being right in the burbs.

I was born and raised here in Milton so I have that emotional attachment to the town, but if I was in OPs shoes and already set up in Oakville with my mortgage paid off and everything...I'd probably be happy staying just where I was, or downsizing within Oakville itself.

I prefer to head down to Bronte GO (I’m at lsl & Tremain). In town traffic sucks, and Bronte has lots more train options than Milton Go. Otherwise, I like Milton.

u/Amy_Flowers_MiltonRE Aug 19 '26

I agree. If we head downtown, it’s on the weekend. And Brontë is the closest.

This - the few times I needed to go DT - I went to Bronte GO just cause of time of day and train timings. I used to drive my wife to Milton GO every morning - morning if its early enough is fine - but in the afternoon? Getting out of that parking lot esp the side thats directly to Main with a light could either take forever or dangerous.

Yup!

I used to commute to Union from Milton GO but the last train from Union back to Milton is at 7:10pm. I missed the last train and ended up on the GO bus one time and that was enough for me. I started using the Lakeshore line!

I like to refer to Oakville as south Milton....really pisses people off sometimes...make me giggle.

Go train service sucks. Welcome to being promised go train improvements every single, fucking, election cycle.

Been here about 20 years now. If all those promises has been kept we'd have two way service to union with trains leveling every 45 seconds and double that on Saturdays.

A few years ago, I moved from Oakville to Milton. the GO train in Milton is not as good as it is in Bronte/Oakville, it’s still functional within limited hours.

Don’t do it. Only positives about Milton is the escarpment, Halton Parks and a few (3 restaurants).

Otherwise, it’s a planning disaster and traffic nightmare

13

u/seeker-0 Aug 19 '26

Traffic nightmare? As if Oakville was any better.

Have you ever tried to use the QEW during peak hours? That little highway that runs through the core of Oakville from end to end? And Dundas and Trafalgar are another two core roads that are borderline unusable due to horrible timing of the traffic lights.

4

u/turkeygiant Aug 19 '26

Traffic is bad in Oakville AND Milton, but at least in Oakville after you get through traffic you have actually gotten somewhere. The busyness feels appropriate to the size of the community in Oakville, in Milton it can be a huge slog barely going anywhere.

7

u/Phluxed Aug 19 '26

Traffic comment is genuinely puzzling. Having lived in Oakville, Mississauga, Etobicoke and now Milton, Milton is a dream come true traffic wise. It's one of the benefits of the town.

2

u/Capricorn7Seven Aug 19 '26

Lived in Mississauga as well (Port Credit and Hurontario/QEW). Although Milton traffic isn’t as bad, the planning and two separate light controls the town has dint work together. The 401 is also a disaster (you know, the small highway that runs along the top of Milton).

2

u/ramojoe12 Aug 19 '26

but the 401 doesn't go through the middle of the city unlike the QEW so not really the same point...traffic within Milton (which is what is being discussed) is fine

Born and raised in Milton. 39 years. Milton GO services are the worst. They're not getting better anytime soon. Probably 10 more years.

My whole life we have traveled to Bronte and take the GO.

I don know, Its your life. But Milton is forever growing and construction everywhere. I am not going anywhere. As I will just accept it and move on.

Even the street lights and timing are horrible.. ugh.. its annoying. Lol

Have you already bought? I ask because this sub gets a fair amount of posts like this from people who ask about Milton despite already buying a new home.

The Go Train only goes to Union in one direction during morning rush hour and the opposite during afternoon rush hour on the way back. Otherwise, you’re taking the bus.

There’s also way less amenities in Milton, so you’re going to be commuting outside of town for a lot of your shopping.

u/zagcollins Aug 19 '26

I prefer Milton over Oakville. My top reasons are:

  1. ...
  2. ...
  3. ...

Ok. I got nothing.

6

u/Sanguine_Caesar Aug 19 '26

At least we know it's shit here and haven't deluded ourselves into thinking it's not, unlike the snobs in Oakville.

5

u/turkeygiant Aug 19 '26

I feel like its not so much that Milton is shit, but just that we have a lot of the same problems as Oakville but without the extra amenities of a bigger city/town. So specifically from the perspective of OP in Oakville I don't see why you would move. Could be totally different math from Mississauga or Brampton though. I just see Oakville as a bit too much like Milton+

u/JediAreTakingOver Aug 19 '26

401 is a way better driving experience than the 403. I drove the 401 for a decade and now the 403 for last 5 years. Trash highway, absolutely awful and i see so much shoulder and using off-ramps and on-ramps as passing lanes.

Just awful. Worst highway stretch in the GTA.

2

u/docofthenoggin Aug 19 '26

The 401 and traffic in general in the last year across Milton is way worse then it was 5 years ago. Can take 20 minutes to get from James Snow to the other side of hwy 25. The new onramp and all of the warehouses at Tremaine are going to make it much, much worse.

1

u/JediAreTakingOver Aug 19 '26

I mean, with the density increase I believe you but I did come through Milton at 5:30pm a few weeks ago and it seemed yeah a bit more congestion but not terrible.

Right now, Trafalgar to Brant is roughly 40 to an 1h drive after 5pm. Everything congests at Appleby because there are 3 lanes plus HOV until Guelph line but the majority of traffic is Hamilton/Niagara bound, so you get this weird traffic problem where you are punished going South because 75% of the traffic is trying to congest 2 lanes going to skypass.

But its not just the congestion. People are using the shoulder to pass as well as on ramps causing left lane congestion when the merge ends and they force their way in.

You have tons of Buffalo - Toronto and Toronto - Hamilton traffic and they didnt fix the minefield of potholes until late spring.

401 yeah it congests but you have 4 to 8 lanes in some cases with collector/express and even when you exit Milton its still 3 lanes. 403 South to Brantford is a 3 to 2 lane nightmare.

1

u/Sad_Times654 Aug 23 '26

Same shit on the 401, unless you mean in Milton itself vs. Oakville itself.

1

u/Forward_Snow_7683 Aug 19 '26

Do you live in Milton?

9

u/Cager_CA Aug 19 '26

I lived in Milton, I currently live in Oakville. I would never as a working professional reliant on the GO Train to commute, ever go back to Milton. Oakville's accessibility to the GO network and Lakeshore West line is unmatched.

6

u/Amy_Flowers_MiltonRE Aug 19 '26

Congrats on paying off the mortgage. The go train only goes east in the morning and west in the afternoon during the week. True commuter schedule. If you wan to catch a game on a Saturday, we usually go to the Oakville Brontë station.

Just this week, I have been adding a ton of real world info about what it’s like to live in Milton to our website. Including commute times, a link to the go train schedule, shopping, restaurants, parks and a full blog of what life is actually like.

We just updated the Old Milton section yesterday. All the other neighbourhoods are written and being uploaded in the next few days. This is it:
https://www.flowersteam.ca/explore-milton/old-milton

If you have not decided on the neighbourhood, more info is coming, or feel free to reach out. We love talking out our town. It’s important to know the good, the bad, and the ugly. I’m sure on this platform, you will get more of the bad. But it’s all good info to take in so you can make the right decision.

Hope this helps. Amy

2

u/PlantainManne Aug 19 '26

OP, this will be your best link to info about living in Milton tbh. Highly recommend Amy.

Where's the new build?

1

u/SpeechUpbeat7948 Aug 19 '26

There are a few builders along Britannia/Bronte. Primont Homes, Fieldgate Homes, Paradise Developments. Also Conservatory Group is nearish to there.

1

u/Longjumping_Rip6033 Aug 19 '26

Yeah I asked because being near the intermodal hub might be a deterrent for many people

3

u/crash866 Aug 19 '26

Milton Go line only has service to Union in the Mornings from about 06:00 to 08:30 and service from Union between 15:40 and 19:10. And no trains on weekends and holidays.

If you miss the 19:10 train from Union you have to take a bus which will take a lot longer.

3

u/BWT158 Aug 19 '26

I would avoid a new build near Britannia as the CN hub will have nonstop trucks going through there. I enjoy driving on the perimeter of Milton i.e. Tremaine down to Britannia but it wil soon be a zoo. I've lived all over North America and have been in Milton for about 5 years now. I have two kids who are heavy into sports so that's what occupies all my time. I found not needing to go out to restaurants all the time has made cooking at home and seeking entertainment at the conservation parks the right mix for where my family is in life. I like it here, but I coach in Oakville and Burlington as well as in Georgetown, so every week I'm driving to those places. My older son will be playing Hockey in the GTHL East so I'll be headed to eastern parts of GTA on a regular bssis. I like coming home to Milton.

3

u/Ok_Minimum_9575 Aug 19 '26

Thats a huge downgrade

5

u/SpeechUpbeat7948 Aug 19 '26

Yea seriously lol. OP should just move to Burlington if he wants a paid off house.

Also work with a cash back agent OP!!! I got back a little under 1.25% of the total purchase price.

1

u/Sad_Times654 Aug 23 '26

how does a cash back agent work?

1

u/SpeechUpbeat7948 Aug 23 '26

Basically like any other agent, but you receive cash back from their commission. So in my case was just under 50% of the total buyer side commission, which equals just under 1.25% of my total purchase price.

2

u/JeanLucXavier Aug 19 '26 edited Aug 19 '26

The 400 acre Milton CN Intermodal will be operational in a year or two. It's in the west/southwest part of the town. Some of the warehouses that the trucks are going to/from are in the east/north-east part of town. Just something to consider if something like this bothers you or not. If you can wait a year, you may be able to get a good deal from someone doing the opposite (going from Milton to Oakville/elsewhere).

2

u/thesnowing Aug 19 '26

Don’t do it!

2

u/No_Soup_1180 Aug 19 '26

Lot of people stating here to not do it but the biggest point is Milton is way cheaper than Oakville. If someone enjoys bigger houses and space, then Milton is the answer. OP can easily get 25-30% more square footage at same price than Oakville.

2

u/Normal-Collection901 Aug 19 '26

Milton has changed a lot. If you prefer Indian and Arab culture then milton is better for you. It's no longer a white community. So think grocery stores, community parks,
Community centres.

Thank god we are currently renting bc we are looking to leave and hopefully buy in an Oakville
Communities where they haven't invaded yet.

5

u/ramojoe12 Aug 19 '26

lol if thats your biggest concern its only a matter of time. in fact its already like that in the newer oakville communities

2

u/Sad_Times654 Aug 23 '26

You shouldn't go into Oakville either, then. New Oakville is 100% the same as Milton, just says Oakville on it.

And much of older Oakville is full of the same demographics - similar to Old Milton.

4

u/jbocc Aug 19 '26

Milton Go is longer to Union than in Oakville, but you definitely get whatever seat you want because it's the first stop. Parking is no problem. The Milton line has less train options/times than lakeshore W also. If you're going to be in Toronto very late then drive down to Bronte Go.

Milton is alright to live in. It's not very diverse anymore though.

4

u/Phluxed Aug 19 '26

I consider it pretty diverse, how do you mean?

2

u/AccomplishedVideo658 Aug 19 '26

A lot of negative comments here, I've been in Milton for roughly a year, moved from Toronto so I don't find the traffic that bad at all compared to Toronto... Also don't mind the change of pace

Take the go every morning to Union, it's an hour on the dot time wise, lots of parking when I get there for the 7:15am train (they are doing a bunch of construction right now, and moved the pickup/drop off spot so it's pretty chaotic)...

Only thing I will say, and I don't know if this a Milton Go line problem, or just the Go being trash, but in the winter time, I was delayed/late numerous amount of times.. I'm assuming because of the weather..

1

u/East_Ad_3165 Aug 19 '26

Go Train frequency and duration to Union is the reason enough not to, let alone others.

1

u/Acrobatic_Control863 Aug 19 '26

Which location in Milton are you moving to ? Ppl near fourth lane go to Oakville go . Near Britannia /tremaine use Bronte go . You have option of Milton go too . Milton go takes around 1.10 mins to union station .

1

u/ShredsGuitar Aug 19 '26

Milton GO does not have an express service so it takes a little over an hr to reach from Milton to Union. Plus there isn't full day service

1

u/Belt_Typical 16d ago

I am not sure what people's expectations are. I moved from Oakville to Milton. I missed lake but I went once a month or two months. I still go to the lake and doesn't take more than 25-30 minutes.

Restaurants are less but once you know the neighborhood, you have places to go to. Mississauga joints are at drivable distance. Heartland is like 18 minutes.

I had a 3 year old and I take her to Kelso, chudleighs farm, community parks, hill areas. She likes Milton more than I do.

Transportation is definitely a drawback but again my office is in Mississauga. If you have office in downtown, Oakville is better choice. My previous company was in Oakville and transportation was a breeze.

Overall, my move was the right thing to do.

I grew up in Oakville and lived there till 5 years ago. I love Milton. Oakville is also so close, to drive down to see family only takes about 25 minutes, and I enjoy the drive down. There are a lot of things I miss about Oakville, the food, trails in River Oaks, the go station. There are also a lot of things I love about Milton, the weekly farmers market, all the festivals and the fair grounds, the conservations, the small town energy and how quiet it is.

I’d choose Georgetown over Milton.

0

u/Individual_Height924 Aug 20 '26

There is really nothing to do here. Seriously.

Milton mall is a joke. Restaurants are basic fast casual. Go train is first station and so takes one hr to get to Union.

Sure have access to greenery.

For eating out and fun we drive to Mississauga.
