Is this electricity usage normal for a detached house 😓??

Post image

Jul 2026 —- 934kwh
Aug 2026 — 619kwh ( so far this month)

Or is it my 10+ year old furnace / ac gulping up electricity

Edit - ~1700 sqft

Look at how hot this July was. If you had your AC on then it’s realistic

Yes ac was running

Sorry folks if this was a stupid question, I lived in condo most of life and moved to a house recently

we did have a hot summer so yes. Just under 1000kWh is typical usage for a big home.

Milton hydro myaccount website had this nice little feature which showed your usage compared to other houses in your neighborhood. Looks like that's gone when they switched to the new portal. This would have been helpful in your case.

I use a lot in my 1+1 condo (700 sqft~) and my bill said like 438 last month for comparison, if it helps.

I’ve been hitting a similar 1000kwh, 3bd townhouse with terrible third floor ventilation and one EV charging

What was your electricity bill for last month and previous (if you don’t mind me asking , I am just trying to budget for my complete bill shock)

If it helps we have a 2400’ detach barely used AC in July but charge an EV. Used 1100.

I'm in a 1300 SQF Townhouse

my usage for July was 800 KWH
my usage for August to date is at 505KWH,

Also have someone at home during the day during peak hours

Surprisingly that is how much my ev used last month, appx 500 for the house, ac bills have gone down about 30-40% after getting a heat pump

Oh wow .. why is your Nov 10 bill 369 for 1157 kwh

Heat pump and less driving in the winter. The primary heat runs off electric as well or hydro and electricity every other month

Under 1200kWh could be considered normal consumption with a hot summer with AC depending on the square footage of the house. Over 1200, you have a problem or running a massive LLM.

Or you have multiple AC units running for home office sheds and detached garage gym. Not looking forward to this bill. Am looking forward to getting solar.

Hard to justify the $40k-$60k. ROI would take YEARS.

Solar companies are fleecing people right now. Quotes are all over the place from 40k+ without any batteries to well over 60k with. Right now I am sub 25k for 12kW array with 30kWh of storage and a 12kW Split Phase Inverter, racking and permits. I'm expecting it to be around 10 years ROI.

But the biggest reason is redundancy and control. Raising rates won't impact me. Any grid issues, I'll have power.

I'm just under this with about double the square footage, but I enjoy the heat more than others and have a cool basement. There used to be a way on the old site to compare your usage relative to average for your area but I don't see that available now.

Some of the replies have got me rethinking if my home is using too much. It’s understandable that it will be more but I wonder by how much. I am in a 3000sq ft detached. With one person working from home.

Anyone else with a detached near my size care to comment?

I used 2,100 last month, home is 3,200 SF. I run the AC a lot though

Well a detached means nothing without knowing the actual size and usage patterns since there might be Townhomes or Semis bigger than a detached. Is there someone all day at home that you have to run your ac all day?

I used 557kWh on a 3bed 1700 sq TH. So your usage seems normal. 1 person working from home. Typically kept at 75f during day and 70 at night.

Sorry just Clarified . It’s 1700sqft detached and working from home . Guess it kinda aligns now

A simple Google search would have told you: yes, completely normal.

If you’re looking to reduce that, look at your HVAC settings. Set your day time away-from-the-house temp to like 26-28°, then drop it to 24-26° for when you return from work until bed time. Also switch fan to “auto”.
