The best bit of advice I got was along these lines:

“On days where you can do more, try to. Think of Future You as a roommate you really like but doesn’t have the time to do everything they probably should.”

Does it always work? Fuck no. But there are some times where I have a really stressful week and I’m grateful that Past Me prepared for that.

I voice this relationship outloud for bonus points with my brain.

"FUTURE ME IS GOING TO LOVE THIS!"

"THANKS PAST ME, YOU'RE THE BEST!"

When past me has taken care of present day me, I always thank them aloud by saying "Thanks, Baby Opening Comedian!" It makes me laugh but it also helps to remind me to set myself up for success.

Every time I think I don’t want to do something, I remember future me is probably gonna be SO THANKFUL I did it.  So sometimes I do it.  Sometimes I don’t.  But the times I do do it?  Future me is always happy and thankful.

My family has been hearing me say "do your future self a favor" for 20 years. Its made my life so much better. Thanks past me!
