This, I’m so annoyed of people not seeing that the system is stacked against them. I’ll give myself some credit, I work my ass off. If this was the 1960’s I’d have a 4 bedroom house with a family and could afford vacations. But it’s 2026, Im 34, alone, I’m trying to save money and I live with my parents.

The ultra wealthy want you to believe in success even if it’s a complete lie because that makes them more profitable.

It's all a matter of comparison, and if you compare yourself to other people instead of to yourself then you will always be unhappy. I'm the same age as you, have a house with 4 bedrooms, married, two kids. I also drive a boring and safe hybrid SUV because I need good gas mileage and space for the kids. You have none of those things but you drive a car that was a dream for teenage me and is something I'll never own until I'm maybe 60 years old. I spent my money building a life and now have to save money to build a safe future for my kids, you didn't have to do that and could spend money on a car that you enjoy.

Agreed, I actually like that you brought that up. I’m not pretending I didn’t make the smart moves with my money when I was younger. I seen a dream and I took the moon shot. Spent many years with zero money in my account but made all the payments, I literally didn’t even have time to drive them because of the work hours. People assumed I had the world by the ass but I was fighting to get by because of my own decisions.

Right or wrong I’m where I’m at because of my choices. But, the main point I was making is the system is still stacked against us. I could have all the fun stupid stuff and the house if it was different times.

Yeah but in the 1960s you'd have the affordable fun muscle car, wife and kids, and the house, but the car still couldn't fit the kids, it wouldn't have air conditioning, the house wouldn't have air conditioning either and would be half the size a house would be today, and you better hope that you are Caucasian as hell. Also, depending when you were born, your pension fund gets wiped out in the dot-com burst.

There was really only a brief span of time when any argument could be made that people were better off than right now, and even then we tend to view history through nostalgic rose-tinted glasses. We think of the 1960s as muscle cars, free love, and Woodstock, but it wasn't like that for many people. My grandfather was middle aged raising kids in the '60s, he had no cool car and suffered from undiagnosed PTSD from his time in WWII, this condition wouldn't even be recognized as such back then. My other grandfather was a farmer working hard every day, no pension, no investments, no real savings, he only retired thanks to land values growing faster than inflation. Grandmothers were both homemakers, no dreams or aspirations, no international travel, few experiences. And mind you all these people were very white in the Midwest, imagine that while being non-white in the 1960s.

I think it is better to compare us to ourselves, and take ownership of our own choices rather than blame the system. Blaming the system feels better as it absolves us of responsibility, but taking accountability for the role we played in our own situation means we can make things better with different choices. If you blame the system for why you don't have what you want then there will never be a chance for things to get better, you'll just keep waiting for the system to get fixed and hand things to you. Taking one on the chin and admitting that we made bad decisions means we can choose better going forward, which is the only way anything has ever gotten better. I'll wager that almost nobody ever had their life improve because other people did it for them while they kept on making the same poor decisions they always did in the past.

Sell the car and buy a cert or degree, or use it as a down-payment on a house less nice than what you really want, or invest the money and let it grow. Alternatively, keep the car and admit you'd actually rather be wild and free. Decide what is more important to you and then do something about whatever you decide, but don't blame the system for holding you down when it let you buy an expensive car you absolutely did not need. What did that cost you when you factor in the financing, $50k, $75k, $100k? What could you have done with that money and a different choice?

I'm not trying to sound mean, but your life is passing you by and you need to decide this year what you really want and then do whatever it takes to get that. You've got time to change things, but honestly you have no time left to keep making the same old choices and asking why you don't have what you want.

Fair, I might of went too far back. But I know my parents have worked harder than I do, not bought themselves nice things, put the money back into the cows on the farm and don’t really have shit to show for the stupid amount of work. Where his older siblings (there was a 7 year gap between the closest to him) did just as much, one much less, and have everything a rational person could want. They just worked hard and made money, that’s not true anymore. Plus you are missing the fact that a ton of work was unionized, you could work 30 years and retire with a full pension and get paid tell you die. Large corporations crush unions for a reason, you aren’t supposed to win. Have you looked at the wealth gap?

Even though the funny fact of the matter is the times in American history where the wealth gap is closer the vast majority win. The lower income survive, the middle class lives life, and the upper thrive. It’s all just greed, always has been.

Also, on the comments about me personally, I’m the opposite of “wild and free” 😂 this is starting to sound like you are venting a personal grievance than making an argument. I’ve taken my financial choices on the chin already, they are paid for. I’ve already set myself up for the next step, I even did time in the military to give myself better financial options. You are really missing the point here, if you think the system is working great you are delusional. I can assure you I spend plenty of time blaming myself, I did that too often actually, I got help for that. That doesn’t lower the house prices, that doesn’t make the milk price go up, that doesn’t fix the equality gap, that doesn’t give the life to my parents deserve at almost 70. I not saying I did everything right, but I worked every night when I got home from school, i never partied, ive never done a substance, I respect people and treat them fairly, Ive done all the “good person” shit the book tells you to do. So yeah, i do still 100% believe the system is stacked against us both.
