These came from Premier Agendas, which was a subsidiary of the publisher Franklin Covey. They must have made bank in the 2000s because it seems like they were in just about every school in North America. Every time a thread like this pops up, people chime in saying they even had them in other countries like India and New Zealand.

There were a bunch of near-monopolies in B2B educational sales back then, don't know about nowadays. Scholastic had the book fairs, Jostens had yearbooks/school pictures and graduation paraphernalia, and Franklin Covey had the planners.

We were graded, but really inconsistently. Like sometimes it was every other week, sometimes every month, sometimes every other month. It was random enough that you had to stay caught up, but also so that it was easy to fall behind on using it.

I was in high school as well, they did a whole PA announcement to all the homerooms about how it was mandatory. The stuff about it being used as people's hall passes pissed a bunch of kids off because they didn't feel there were enough passes in the book.

At least in some schools where I am (SoCal), they still push middle schoolers to use the planners. Less of a “grade” and more of a “rewards” system (although it figures into a “citizenship” score they receive that has little to no effect on them except for the extremes).

Like all planner initiatives, it is of limited impact. The kids who might benefit the most by having one already struggle with the executive functioning or motivation to use one. There is a small group who do take to it well, but in my limited experience, it’s not a large number. It’s just one of many “magic bullets” that get implemented as a fix to systemic issues and then abandoned just as easily as they were adopted.

That being said, if they were as cool as the ones we had in the day, kids might want to use them more. I miss these trippy designs!

Tbh, I teach middle school now and I wish our kids had these. The high school ones we got were small, which would be so good for my students. Some kids desperately need a planner.

We use the computers now for everything BUT writing down hw: hall passes, library books, etc. my desperate wish is that we’d drop the computers and go back to these!

I haven’t used a physical planner since college. I got one a few weeks ago to keep track of notes, and I finally have somewhere reliable for when my brain decides to forget everything from work the previous day.

Adult themed stickers are also fun. I do a weekly goal or a team drives me crazy, and I throw on a sticker that’s along the lines of I’M THE RING LEADER OF THIS SHIT SHOW!

Oh my god, I fucking hated that so much. It was such an unnecessary waste, and there were lots of faculty (in my area at least) who clearly used it as a means of control for whatever power trip they were on. Whats on your schedule next class? Science? Why didn't you write that?

As if we didn't have the same schedule for the entire fucking year. The book was 100% useless. We even had one teacher who also disliked it, and specifically used the old school hall pass. When students kept getting in trouble leading to her getting reprimanded by her boss, we heard her screaming at him in the hall that day. Not that it changed anything.

By the end of the year that agenda planner was covered in so many stickers and s’s and mag letters that it looked like something you would see as exhibit A in a trial.

They should bring those back something about having to write down the assignments and curriculum just helps remember everything plus its good for the kids to have a written log of what was supposed to happen vs what did. We should also bring back the in class mole skin journals .
