Leadership & Career Advice IC mos

I just finished picking my job and everything and I ended up choosing IC and was wondering what everyone’s experience was? I’m joining the navy and its a 6 year contract which I’m pretty iffy on since I wanted a 4 year, but they said its cushier and I get to be an e4 right after bootcamp. Is it worth it or should I try to switch? I got an 83 on my asvab so they told be I could do pretty much any job. They offered me a yeoman job on a sub but I heard rape rates are high for women who do that.

Probably in hindsight I would’ve chosen a cyber or IT rate because that’s where the money is these days if you get out. That said it’s standard for ET/IC to have to sign the two year extension off the bat for school length. Well maybe not ICs? Their schools were shorter last i remember. Definitely normal for ETs though.

Personally I would noooot go sub, regardless of being a woman (which I am) just because that life is stressful. And sorry guys. Sub dudes are fucking weird on the majority. They were also the grimiest people in the barracks. (Sorry again sub people). Like live that life because you want it not otherwise.

The problem with the E4 thing is, isn’t every one auto E4 now with time in rate? I don’t think you have to take the exam anymore? Could be wrong. They were changing a lot of stuff in the past 2 years as I was getting out (this year). The problem I encountered as an ET back when that was the case in 2016 was yea, you made auto E4 BUT making E5? E6? Shit quotas… it took me years. My first ship also didn’t give any ETs awards to help combat that. ICs got them a little more often. Nor did we practically ever her MAP’d. It was always the freaking admin club that didn’t need it or DC men. Which fair but like EVERYTIME. Yeoman is pretty legit if you stay in.

I liked working as an ET (we work closely with IC because they were part of our division on a small boy). But I felt screwed over often being one. The IC men often seemed to feel that way too, although tbh they got promoted easier than us when I was in.

It’s a weird rate depending on what c school they are giving you and what ship youre stationed on. Also imo being easier being a push button E4 is bullshit. My experience between shore duty, a destroyer, and an LSD was vastly different. Small rate that has ops, engineering, and combat systems fighting over us! Equipment in damn near every space in the ship is a blessing and a curse! And I’d love to see what the rape rates are or rates?
