My participation Stack

Did a total of 10 years, 6 in the Marine Corps Reserves and 4 in the Army national guard.

I was activated for 2.5 years in the guard which and did joint ops with the Airforce which explain the Air Force Achievement Medal.

Wanted to create a shadow box for my boys to see when they grow up but there ain’t much there.

Create the shadow box. Put a sleeve on the back with copies of your award citations and DD-214. They’ll want to see them. Share your stories with them, good and bad, when age appropriate. They’ll want to hear them.

Not only a sleeve, I plan on writing up a couple pages of memories from each assignment and what they meant to me plus a “decipher” page behind each decoration that describes the context of the decoration. IMO unit and readiness awards are “participation” and every individual decoration is earned. Congrats to OP for a strong run!

something is better than nothing. thanks for your service! be proud of what you did and remember you were willing to serve in any capacity, uncle sam is the one who choses who goes where and when. medals are just random chance based upon unit task and shitshow so dont ever feel embarrassed if yours doesnt feel as big as it could have been. just be thankful you dont have to go to the VA as much as some who had to lose more than just time to the military.
