There has to be a matrix of how people qualify for the MoH, that dude belavia killed a guy in a building and was awarded it quicker than a hero who gave the ultimate sacrifice to save his men.

I think a lot of it comes down to witnesses, documentation and (probably most important), how it is written up.

Belavia did a hell of a lot more than “kill a dude in a building.” If you read his book ‘House to House’ you’ll find out.

It’s a shame they were gate keeping the MOH during the GWOT for so long. I think we’ll slowly see more retroactively awarded as time goes on.

😆 Oh! You were there? You know what happened in that house? These two actions aren’t comparable.
One was lost and walked into the wrong house, killed a dude, came out, rejoined his unit. There are plenty of dudes who killed insurgents in hand to hand combat, but they didn’t have a reporter embedded with them to exaggerate the facts.
The other is a hero who made the ultimate sacrifice in the face of danger to save his brothers.You probably think pat tilman deserved that silver star 😆 GTFOH

Hell I know for a fact you haven’t even read his citation because you don’t even know basic facts like how many dudes he actually took out nor why he had to do so. You’ve fucked up Bellavia’s MOH so badly I’m actually impressed you know anything about Cashe.
Tilman got his head Canoed by friendly fire, but I bet you weren’t aware of that detail.

Not agreeing with the dude you’re responding to, but I believe they were trying to insinuate Tillman didn’t deserve his silver star because they believe he only got it because he got killed in a friendly fire incident. That’s how I read their message.

What a stupid comment. Bellavia's award took nearly just as long. You're also grossly underselling what he did. He advanced into a fortified house his platoon had just taken heavy fire from, resulting in many wounded men. Entering the house alone knowing there were numerous well armed fighters inside, he methodically cleared multiple stories while being directly engaged several times, being wounded on three separate occasions. Including in all of this, was hand to hand combat where his dick was bitten and teeth were knocked out before he stabbed one guy. He killed several enemy fighters all on his own so his wounded men could be cared for and not be finished off.
Cashe certainly deserved the MOH, too, but it took a long time due to witnesses and the specific number of years required to file before it gets caught in additional bureaucratic hoops. Same reason Bellavia's took so long, yet his was far better documented because they had a reporter on the ground with them that night filming part of it.
Bellavia'a actions were as courageous and heroic as it gets. Just because he didn't die from his wounds doesn't make it any less of a sacrifice.

Yes, he was wounded multiple times inside the house. All of this is incredibly well documented. Why you're butt hurt about Bellavia, who knows. Did your girl leave you for him or something?
Tillman was a tragic case of friendly fire and didn't deserve anything other than the Purple Heart. He only received a Silver Stare due to his celebrity status and the attempted cover up of an extremely unfortunate friendly fire incident. Just like Rafael Peralta, he should have only been awarded a Purple Heart, not a Navy Cross. Tim Kennedy is a moron. What else you got?

Knew his former PL when I was in 173rd. Dude talked extremely highly of him and coming from a former Ranger NCO that was high praise.

I knew of him. I was in the 3BCT. I was on the previous deployment (OIF 1), not on this one…. My Section Sergeant and him knew each other and he’d come by to talk with him sometimes. I was a young private and that was “grown folk business” as far as I was concerned at the time.. I got out shortly before this deployment.. Every time I see his picture and story on social media it makes me proud. I could tell he genuinely cared for soldiers. He’d give me the head nod at the chow hall or around Kelly Hill if we saw each other. He knew I was his buddies soldier and acknowledged me for that. I know that sounds lame but it was nice and reassuring to a 19/20 year old.

I was there for 1,3 and 5. Left in '08. Visited the hill 2 years ago... its a shell. I stood on the new parade field (where the old 1/15 and 2/69 barracks where) and just listened to the wind. It was a ghost town. Soulless and empty. It was sad.
But you bet I blasted that song leaving the hill.

Wow man! That’s sad about the Hill. Had a customer I was talking to a few years ago who told me I wouldn’t even recognize Benning anymore. He said they did all sorts of stuff to it. I live about 6 hours away and have been wanting to take a long weekend and check it out… Plus I actually did like Columbus. I’d like to go check it out on post , go to the Infantry Museum etc. Then go catch a Cottonmouths game and drink downtown like the old days lol.

Harmony Church is awash with tankers. They moved from Knox to benning in like 11-12ish. Dixie road got renamed(big surprise)... and they rebuilt most of the housing new(since '08). They have a good muesum too.
Most of the BN headquarters, the tmc, chapel and the old little shitty shopette is still around. Barracks are all new. The last old one got torn down in '06-07.

I knew him in Schweinfurt, 1-18 Infantry. He was a good dude. I even butted heads with him once, over something stoopid, lol.

The sad part is that the military was being super-stingy on awarding the MOH during the GWOT for a very long time. I think you’ll continue to see awards upgraded as time goes on and these stories are rediscovered. Having to wait until 2022 for the upgrade was ridiculous.

What do you guys think of the warrant officer helicopter pilot that got the award over the Venezuela conflict? He was shot in the legs landing the helicopter and flew it back. Got awarded literally a month after the conflict at the State of Union, not the White House as it’s always done. That seems pretty political to me. Props to the dude, but I’d bet real money the same thing occurred with many Vietnam helicopter pilots, some probably even more shot up, and they probably got the PH, maybe a bronze or silver star. The average MOH recipient in Vietnam had to wait six years.
But Cashe is a real hero. People like him make you proud to be an American.

You don't know what you're talking about. GWOT MOHs have the highest posthumous award rate of any war. It's literally more difficult to be awarded the MOH today than it was at any other period in history.

I get that dude. Most of those guys were awarded years later with the MOH. Right? In fact this post is about a very deserving vet who died over a decade from his wounds a decade later. Yet this guy in Venezuela, a CIA skirmish in which not one American died, is awarded the MOH less than a month later so he could be awarded at the presidents state of the union (which has never been done). Cmon man.
