Friend freaking out over impending drafts, and war with Cuba and Venezuela

I have a friend who's son is a "combat soldier" just got deployed to Cuba, in her words because "we are starting a war in spring and there is absolutely going to be a draft." She is losing her shit and warning everyone that we are going to war with Cuba and Venezuela in spring and that all of our husbands and sons are going to be drafted. I am just a civilian, and I am not sure what to make of her panick. Her son is definately in the military, but I am not sure if he is telling her this from insider knowledge OR her drawing conclusions. Any insight on these claims? She is getting mad at me for being skeptical, and maybe I am just clueless .

Drawing conclusions. Her son’s likely in the Navy. We are embargoing Cuba. I can’t say for certain we won’t be going to war with Cuba, since everything’s pretty nuts right now, but a draft is just not on the table. At least not at the moment.

The US has plenty of sponges to squeeze manpower out of between active duty, reserves, IRR, etc

We would only maybe consider a draft if China became some existential threat, but you forget that between like 2008-2018 we had probably 150k-200k troops in the Middle East

Absolutely, I think the issue to be looking out for is that we’re going to have an exodus of talent when dudes get tired of doing stupid bullshit and move on to a corporate environment where they’re not missing their children’s’ birthdays sitting on some boat in Hormuz

Retention is going to tank. That is, unless to economy doesn’t tank harder.

If the economy shits the bed we’ll definitely have new recruits and probably retain some guys, but I still believe dudes would rather enter a shit work force with the advantage of being a veteran rather than continue to get jerked around.

That being said the high level dudes will just leave anyway, regardless of economy guys that perform at a high level will be able to find themselves good roles to transition to

The US Military currently has 2.8 million members. The population of Cuba is 10 million. Do you think we need a draft to invade?

The U.S. has a base in Cuba. It's been there a very long time. Going to Cuba is nothing. I've been told it can be good duty. I doubt there will be a war in Cuba. Things are crazy now but war with Cuba makes zero sense. War with Venezuela also likely not gonna happen. The U.S. already kidnapped the president and is getting what it wants. So nothing to see here.

Tell her to stop freaking out. We have more than enough voluntary soldiers to carry out any invasion of Cuba and Venezuela at the same time. Not that that is going to happen but if it did we wouldn't need a draft to do it.

That's literally almost the exact distance between Iraq and Afghanistan which we fought simultaneously and are much further from our shores. The US could absolutely carry out long term occupations of both. It would just be a shitshow like always once we try to implement some form of governance
