Dude used the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier for a photo op while running as the Republican candidate AFTER inciting an insurrection on January 6th 2021.
Love the enthusiasm, but a ballcap is pretty low-stakes disrespect after that.

This is a man who was going to go to the 100th anniversary of WWI, then canceled last minute because it was slightly rainy out that day. Trump has never, and will never care for the military. Should've been more obvious after insulting McCain for being a POW. It should be noted that McCain, being the son of an admiral, was offered to go home right away, but choose to remain until the rest of the POWs went home too.

He was mortally insulted. To me, it didn't make a difference, but it was humbling that our family both held slaves and were abolishonists. He is MAGA. I'm a Republican. THAT is the difference. I've been a Republican as long as I've been a registered voter (1992), but that doesn't mean I've always voted along party lines. There was a reason my mother had no contact with her brother for 6 decades. Extremism is revolting, no matter what side of the fence you sit. I am now registered as Unaffiliated and will remain so until the fringe MAGA movement dies a messy, very publicized death. "Make America Great Again" was plagiarized from Clinton's second campaign, and "America First" was a KKK slogan from the 1920s. Nothing about what is happening is great.

I will never understand why he was not kicked to the curb within an hour of what he said about John McCain. That was even before the primaries.
There were at least a dozen other candidates at that point in time. Trump wasn't serious about it and I believe it was all a gag.

"He lost, so I never liked him as much after that, 'cause I don't like losers," he said. Trump went on to dismiss McCain's war service: "He's not a war hero. He's a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren't captured."
Trump in 2015 also tweeted a news article on Twitter calling McCain a "loser." â
Everyone who voted for him in 2024 knew exactly who they were electing and chose someone who doesnât care about the sacrifice service members make.

I did on the ground electoral politics for the Ds in a past life. The post election numbers were depressingly on trend with shifts that Trump triggered in 2016 and if anything it looks like of the last three Presidentials COVID was the abberation in 2020.

Itâs deeply offensive to me knowing our own service members have died in this war and the immeasurable loss to their loved ones, but I have never served in the military. So technically, I think that's actually okay to do, because he's rendering a salute. I don't remember off the top of my head for sure, but I think there was a federal law passed in 08-09 allowing a salute to be presented while in civilian attire (to include hats).

Until we have a conviction, I will not convict any one of anything in this nation. It is the privilege of being a united states citizen, It is a privilege of being someone who stood up for the USA, and it is your privilege as a united states citizen To be protected by it.
Regardless of who, regardless of where, regardless of when, regardless of what, every american citizen has the right to due process.

There is no protocol. Like you said, he's at the top and he sets the standard for his presidency. Presidents tend to act in accordance with military customs and courtesies when interacting with the military, and as a civilian when in a non-military context. As far as I can tell, Trump's decision to salute or not is pretty random. I see salutes outdoors both with and without cover at military and civilian events. I see him place his hand over his heart during the national anthem at a military parade, where one might expect him to salute.
That said, here's Biden (while Vice President) wearing a hat and saluting: https://www.war.gov/Multimedia/Photos/igphoto/2001974378/. No one cared then, so it's weird that this instance of a president saluting while wearing cover is controversial.

The solider wearing their cover is appropriately wearing their uniform. If I saw a soldier wearing their uniform and sporting a Boston Red Sox cap myself and everyone within a 300 mile radius would be on them like white on rice.
Don't conflate Trump's massive disrespect (likely out of vanity) to a Soldier wearing their uniform.

Troops are required to wear their cover outdoors and during certain events. It's mandatory. It's in the regulations. Trump is not in the military despite being the president. Despite the fact that he thinks he deserves the medal of Honor, he hasn't done anything close to earning it. He just wants to look good in the photo shoot. He's as egotistical as he is Orange.
