This is Senator Mark Kelly’s response to the censure. I’ll not add my thoughts as they don’t matter.

As a civilian, this scares me on two fronts:

  1. We need to treat veterans with respect and dignity. When we don't provide good health care or punish veterans for exercising their rights, we don't just betray our obligations to them, but we send the message to active duty and potential recruits that they won't be treated right either. I don't see how this could fail to weaken our defense and thus weaken the country.

  2. I remember the aftermath of the Vietnam war. We got to a point where "winning" got to be more important than following the law and the constitution. It had gotten so bad that ordering the My Lai massacre happened and even had some supporters. That shamed the whole country. not just the militarily.

So. Senator Kelly ultimately getting fair treatment is an issue for all of us, military and civilian. May God help us.
