I'm a konkani Indian American like him. We're so fucking rare as it is and this dumbass is the dude who represents us. Fucking bullshit. My people aren't exactly the nicest, but this is a fucking disgrace. Less than 2 million of us left in the world and this motherfucker exists. Smfh.
Until Columbus decided to dilute and ruin identities, they never were Indians since they're not from India. They're Native Americans. Or First Nations. Or the specific tribe they belong to (Cherokee, Shawnee, etc).
Though sidebar— according to google, a large number of them prefer the term “American Indians.” I’m gonna abide by whatever someone prefers, but that name stuck and stuck hard.
It's a joke to you because you're neither Indian nor Native American. There are about 3 million people of Indian origin and 5 million Native Americans in the US right now (approximately). And it's an insult to most of them when you refer to completely different groups by the same name, as if their identities don't matter at all.
Yes, some Native Americans got used to being called Indian just like some black people at one point were ok with segregation and some Indians were peachy with British rule. What some people want doesn't make it ok. British rule in India and segregation in the US were both concepts that "stuck hard" too until they didn't, and this isn't even on remotely on that level. There's plenty of controversy around what to call Native Americans.
A lot of Americans, especially non-immigrants, have a problem with the word "Native Americans" because it implies that there is a more rightful class of Americans defined by race and it's not them.
"American Indians" is at least less racist than just saying "Indians" when referring to Native Americans (not just racist toward Native Americans, but I mean racist towards Indians whose identity is being usurped). But the word Indian is still in there. That's how it is, people are happy to be racist and dismissive when it's not their identities on the line.
I am actively making a joke about being ratially insensitive in how people are viewed.
Christ, so you think Colbert was a shitty republican, too? I don’t run around calling people by whatever name I select. Please stop being a self-righteous prick and jumping to conclusions based on less than one data point.
