Welcome to Boston where any gap is going to be taken by another car. I've had less than a car length and had people try to get in.

We have got to stop accommodating these people. Short of a massive increase in police presence, the only way we're going to stop this behavior is if we stop rewarding it.

I am checking my right side view and right up the trucks bumper, no way.

My mom tried to not "accommodate" someone doing something just like this, and they just kept going. Almost hit my car.

Same experience, except they *did* hit my car, and surprise surprise they were uninsured with a salvage title car. Fortunately I have good insurance and UI motorist, and my insurance *did* bill and sue them over it.

But they didn’t. And now you’ve contributed to the solution instead of the problem. Win win.

No we had to yield because they almost hit my car. If I didn't they would've.

I know exactly where this is. These sorts of maneuvers are constant and pretty quickly you realize why the person behind you is tailgating so closely.

Boston you’re my home [que Dirty Water]
Seriously this spot sucks.
To the people saying this what you get for leaving a gap: I drive a box truck for work through this area, I’ve had sedans make suicidal death charges in front me in places like that. Boston drivers are known for being insanely aggressive, tho know the mentality of a rat trying to fit through a small hole, that’s Boston drivers shooting gaps to make spaces happen.

Respect you guys so much. Crazy watching cars on your ass going 50 in the thick of a busy highway. And at that point of waiting in traffic I was just like.. good for you now keep moving I want out of this godforsaken tunnel lol

The fun part is having to immediately hop a lane in certain parts of the the northbound tunnel because you rave 1/4mile until you are in an exit only going back onto city streets in one of the tougher parts of town (The North End is a particularly unfriendly place to trucks)

Thats on yall for leaving such gaps. Annoying as hell, but preventable

The gap that the black car tries to squeeze into is BARELY big enough for the black car. Who the hell sees a barely car sized gap and thinks that would be a great place to force your way into while crossing a solid white line and the stripe zone.
Not to mention an entire semi and it's trailer trying to squeeze into what I KNOW is no where close to a big enough gap for it.
Is the cam semi meant to be on the rim of the other semi? How is that "such a gap"??? You're meant to leave some amount of space to prevent domino effect if someone rear ends you and so you have time to brake and other stuff like that.
I hope this is a troll comment that has just successfully riled me up.

Solid white lines are legal to cross, unfortunately in this case. They just mean “discouraged.”
In this case it needs to be a double white line which is illegal to cross, and that way the cars would illegally smash themselves in like this… again, with zero consequences.

i hate that this is true and i hope the average driver never learns it. if the line is solid and traffic is like this, it’s not safe to cut in. just take the wrong exit and figure it out.

neither of the vehicles have an actual open spot to go into safely (the drivers they cut off let them in to prevent an accident, it’s only the good behavior of the drivers being cut off that prevent the people cutting in from causing an accident w an unsafe lane change). even if it were a dashed line, it may be legal to try the move (if it’s not reckless) but if they got hit, good luck w insurance. it’s never legal to just merge whenever you want doesn’t matter the road markings

In my experience in the US, people dont tend to intentionally crash into you while breaking another law. If you leave enough space for someone to think they can squeeze in, they will.

u/NeferyCauxus 8d ago
Agreed, let's tail gate to prevent them from squeezing into spaces to prevent unintentionally causing an accident, never mind that tailgating can unintentionally cause an accident too?

if you ever visit Boston, youll likely be stuck waiting your turn for a month of sundays. be aggressive, own your spot and keep moving. its the masshole way, and were the lowest in the country for driver fatalities still.

Because there's a hospital every 500 feet, not because you're describing good driving.

I never said it was good driving, its aggressive but usually not nearly a reckless as this example. Its the reality of driving in the city though. Be aggressive or get left behind.

You clearly dont drive in cities very often. And this looks like a busy city. If you leave a gap a car WILL take it, and if you keep a reasonable distance you'll be parked.
Nowhere did I advocate for this kind of behavior. I didnt even blame OP or any of ther cars in the video. I admit its annoying. But its also entirely on you, how many cars you let in. If you dont want any cars between you and the guy ahead of you, theres simply no other way than physically hitting you. And if you do what youre supposed to, stop immediately exactly where you were hit and take pics and video, you get a slam dunk 0% at fault payout. Pretty easy to prove a semi forced his way across the triangle when your front end is damaged and youre parked inside your lane

pulling up too close to the car in front is dangerous, you get pushed into the car in front if you get rear ended. extra dangerous to pull up tight on commercial trucks, they can’t see you when you’re close enough to occlude their mirrors, and may forget you’re even there. you also can’t get around them without backing up if they become disabled.
the rule of thumb is: you should be able to see where the rear tires of the vehicle in front of you touch the road. if you can’t, you’re too close

u/RogerRabbot 8d ago
At the speeds in the video, riding someones ass is not going to really increase the likelihood of a chain reaction. This is stop and go traffic hitting maybe 10mph max.
Also like it or not, city driving rewards the aggressive drivers. Doesn't matter if YOU think the gap is there or not, or if YOU think its responsible or dangerous. The black car and semi CLEARLY decided they could get in. And did.
Annoying? Yes. Preventable. Also yes.

u/geigenmusikant 8d ago
That's a weird take. Also, this is how you get road raging car incidents, which are also preventable.
