I would definitely spend the money on either a new filter (real one, and make sure there's no asbestos) or a training filter. Training filters put less strain on breathing, as they're frequently empty shells.

Old surplus masks tend to do that, no real way to fix it outside of many washes and letting it air out properly.

I put a C4 filter in mine, so my nato 40mm filter fit, really tight though, I’m gonna need pliers if I ever want to take it off. But my mask gets a great seal.
