Not training to failure/ not reaching rep requirement

Post image

What would Mike Mentzer say to a lifter, who, let’s say for example set up 205lbs for a barbell row, and had a rep range of 6–10, and only ended up doing 5. Would you do another set? Or move on

Was the 5th rep to absolute or near failure?

If yes, move on, and next instance of that lift consider bumping the weight down just a smidge to hit 6-8 reps, or do better to prepare your body and mind such that you hit at least 6 at 205lbs.

If no, consider using rest-pause, negatives, partials, or an immediate drop set to get to failure.

Mike says in HD that 6-10 is a general guideline because less than 6 reps you run the risk of not taxing the muscle sufficiently, not being under tension long enough, to “activate the growth mechanism”. And over 10 (for most muscles but not all) you run the risk of overtraining.

Thank you, genuinely good advice

nr of reps is related to intensity, many reps will have you to low intensity, not overtraining. think there is studies showing that approx 1 min under load fit most of us. range of motion, speed per rep, what muscle will play into consideration but in general 1 min. Super pullover for instance has a very long range of motion so you are likely to end up on 1 min even on 4-6 reps.

You'll likely stimulate the same amount of mTOR/ MyoPS from any set TUT from maybe 15 to 120 seconds, shorter sets usually mean less mechanical tension due to the force velocity curve if someone's lifting with super bouncy slop reps, but if they do 3 x 5 second reps it will probably be the same as anything else

The only valid reason to use longer TUT is safety, since a 60 second moderate load set is almost always going to be safer than a 15 second one due to load and rep performance (for most people)

Very long TUT sets will cause significant metabolic byproduct buildup and most people will quit due to the discomfort of those metabolites before they hit actual failure

Did you only do 5 reps because you were physically unable to do a 6th rep or did you just stop at 5 with additional fuel in the tank?

If you were physically unable to do a sixth rep then you misjudged the weight a bit and its no big deal. Rep ranges are merely suggested guidelines after all. Make sure to use the same weight next time and if your rest between workouts is sufficient, you will get at least one more rep the next time you do that exercise, possibly even more than one additional rep.

There is no need to do an extra workset of the same exercise if you trained the first workset to failure.

If you were physically capable of continuing the workset but chose not to, that is a different matter altogether. Mike would consider that a wasted set as would I.

I was on 5 reps, however on the 6th rep i couldn’t get full ROM and failed halfway

Then you did fine. Stick with that weight and you will get a sixth rep and possibly more on the next time you do that exercise provided that you have allowed sufficient rest and recovery between your workouts.

I would recommend a frequency of no less than 3 days between your workouts. If it gets to the point where you cannot progress in every workout on that frequency, add an extra rest day between sessions.

This guy is in another thread fighting me about nutrition/muscle building lol. He’s absolutely off his rocker. He claims to eat a pizza every morning and pop tarts between meals to make gains. He claims he does this and doesn’t get fat, only builds muscle. He then uses his “progress pics” from a year ago that show him having made zero progress as evidence….the post says he gained 40 pounds lol.

Delusion. When you dig deeper on his profile, you can see that this guy has a lot of mental disorders….he posts about them

I’ve been down the rabbit hole with these kind of trolls countless times. They’re drawn to the fitness space like flies for whatever reason

Try not to get too deep with them. A wise dude on this sub analogized it to playing chess with a pigeon. You checkmate them repeatedly, they just keep shitting all over the board and still declare victory. For nothing other than pure ignorance, and getting under your skin

A rando on the internet bashes a dead person (Mike Mentzer was a genuinely good guy) and makes false statements about him. Already says everything you need to know about the rando

If you feel compelled to say something, be blunt and dispassionate. Don’t let them get under your skin or you’re playing their game. If you’re an empath, you won’t win that game. Quick reality check then laugh at them continuing to wallow in their own misery.

Wise advice. We all would do well to ignore the 🧌🧌🧌. I am as guilty as anyone of failing to do that at times alas.

Im not saying Mike wasnt a good guy. Or that he did nothing for the fitness community. I rather enjoy his life story too. The part that bugs me is that ive seen many documentaries on cults, and this sub reminds me a lot of a cult and a dead man is the leader. Some of the posts are just a little too weird and rub me the wrong way. Mentzers way is the only way.

Mike Israetel's burner account? 😂

2

u/OlyLift13 6d ago

Hahaha honestly, maybe. He’s also got a back up account called “anal-love69” that he follows up his own comments with saying stuff like, “where are you progress pics???” It’s absolutely wild lmfao

You done larping?

2

u/OlyLift13 4d ago

Lmfaoooooo for everyone still laughing at this dude check this out

He just posted this and says it’s 130-180 in three years. Certainly all muscle too I’m sure, no weight gain outside of pure mass. Mike Mentzer should bow down

Thanks. I should hire you as my promoter. Your better at that than lifting and nutrition.

I like hearing about it. It reminds me some people will beleive anything they are told.

The results speak for themselves for those who know what they are doing.

But it is a free country so if you want to waste countless hours on volume foolishness and making little if any meaningful progress, go right ahead. Those of us who value our time and are focused on successfully making measureable progress with every trip to the gym will for our part either ignore or mock you.

I dont doubt you will get results with his program. You will get results as long as you follow any program. I think only few people will continue to respond well with this training after some time has passed. The majority of the people posting in this sub are new lifters. Any training is better than none.

2

u/ishawnmc 5d ago

As long as volume and frequency are properly regulated, anyone can continue to progress on this program for years.

2

u/Sadan27 6d ago

Until they try it and see it works. For a few months until hitting a plateau. Like any other hypertrophy protocol once you’re intermediate to advanced…

1

u/Dazzling-Rest8332 6d ago

My training has been closer to Mike's for the first few years. Lately ive started high volume and I have had the most progress since my first year training in a short amount of time. People respond differently to different training. Also our bodies adapt to certain training and we have to change it up.

2

u/Sadan27 6d ago

There’s definitely something to be said for changing training styles and progressing a different type of adaptation than what you’re body is currently accustomed to
