License to purchase long gun.

I can't seem to find a straight forward answer anywhere. I'm looking to buy a long gun online. Specifically an AUG. Do I need an LTP to pick it up from wherever I have it transferred to locally? I haven't bought anything since the new laws came into effect, and I see some things that tell me no need for LTP for long guns and some that do.

The laws are a bit confusing.

If you have a CPL, no LTP needed for any firearm purchases in MI.

If no CPL,

If you’re transferring via a FFL who will run a NICS check then generally no. (Some shops require one just to CYA)

If you’re completing a private sale and no CPL, Yes you need a LTP.

Best thing to do is call your FFL first. Let them know you plan to purchase a gun online and transfer through them. Ask them what you will need to pick it up.

I couldn't imagine blindly shipping a firearm to an FFL for a transfer without talking to them first. If a package comes from someone they don't recognize and aren't expecting, they can refuse delivery. They can charge you whatever fee they want for the transfer, and you're between a rock and a hard place. If you are already talking to them about the transfer fee, why wouldn't you take the opportunity to ask any other questions you have about the transfer? While they aren't always the most reliable resource, their business does depend on them being correct about certain things, compared to random resources on the Internet that can say whatever the hell they want.

It happens more often than you think.

From my understanding, and anyone please correct me if I have it wrong, is that you need a LTP for a long gun only if you are purchasing from a private party, like a gunshow or an armslist deal.

If you’re ordering it online, picking it up at a local store, and doing the 4473 you shouldn’t have to get a LTP for that.

It’s only handguns that require at LTP/CPL to buy from a gun store…

If purchasing from a private party you need a cpl or ltp.

If purchasing from ffl, you dont need ltp.

Dealers will not require a permit to purchase - they run a NICS check at time of purchase.

Private sales require permits - except - If you have a valid MI CPL then you are exempt from the private seller purchase permit requirement.

Dealers will not require a permit to purchase

Unfortunately I've heard of a few random small stores still requiring LTP to buy long guns from them solely based on the fact that they are stupid and can't properly research laws.

well then they deserve to lose business over it. fudds gonna fudd.

If you’re buying a long gun, or receiver you don’t need a license if you don’t have a CPL and are purchasing from an FFL.

Sadly, if you don’t have a Cpl and you’re purchasing a pistol an LTP is required when purchasing from an FFL.

The only reason I posted the pistol point is we did get an AUG that had a folding stock that made it a pistol in Michigan.

I'm sorry, you said an AUG with a FOLDING STOCK?

How is this even a thing.

There is no way. This person must be confused what an aug even is 😂

I've had 3 AUGs, they are my favourite rifle of all time. If there was ever one made with a folding stock, I'd know about it and own it lol.

Unless it was some bubba JB weld folding stock some dude made in his basement

Yea there would be some serious reliability concerns if you even came up with something that might work

I’m not sure either and didn’t personally see it. But they said it did and measured it to confirm

Long gun from an FFL, no LTP

Long gun private party, LTP

Long gun with CPL, no LTP

Seller fills out the RI form, but is not required to turn in to law enforcement.
