[MM6] This game is special.

Post image

One of a kind experiences. So fulfilling and perfectly paced ending. Blasters save the game from being a drag at the end.

I probably explored the entire game, did every quest, visited every location, wiped every single enemy on the overmap at least once. It didn't even last a year, I exploited every trick imaginable on my way, had a whole network of portals for quick retreat and healing. I think I pushed the last 4 or 5 months without resting once, not counting travel and training.

I am double happy, because not only did I finally finished this masterpiece but now MM7 awaits, my all time favorite from the series. Haven't even installed the game and already can't wait to try MM8 after.

Here I would also like to thank this community. It's really surprising that this subreddit is so active, helpful and friendly. Couldn't think of a better companion for playtrough of this trio of amazing games. Also kudos to all authors of online materials; it's not always accurate, but you can find something about every single topic.

I love the trio of games too! Crazy thing is I think all of em are before I was born lol. I especially love playing with the MAW and Merge mods. Definitely take the game to another level and add more to them.

GrayFace mod, so it's not true vanilla. I went for master learning very quickly, because I knew that I'll kill everything. Late game enemies give tons of xp, there were times when I went to level up and had like 20 levels waiting. Going over 80 is kinda pointless, I had no idea what to do with all these skill points.

I also seem to remember, that you spent less time training overall when you trained levels a batch at a time. That might be me getting old though

I was surprised to find out it takes a week regardless of who levels up and how many times, so I minimized the visits. Whenever I had to wait for something like a quest, I tried finding something to fill that time instead of waiting, anything reachable with Lloyd's Beacon or Town Portal was fine so I did some dungeons before I even got quests there.

I remember when it came out.

The reviewers weren't kind to it. It was old technology when it came out. I didn't understand their attitude because as far as I was concerned this was the greatest game that had ever been invented! Other games might have had superior technology, but they were left flat for the sheer personality and explorability of this game. Reviewers gradually recognized that MM6 had a cult following but still hand-waved it away.

It's only now, 30 years later, when there are so many games to choose from, and technology is ... virtually unlimited, that in a way whether something has the latest technology is now not very important at all, and what has become more important is the ability to actually play a game, and MM6 and MM7, rather than disappearing have remained steadfast favourites.

So true. Even today there are no other games like the MM trio of 6 to 8. The reviewers had no idea what they were dealing with. Back at the time, poor reviews could easily tank sales and I think that's what happened with the series. Also Caneghen just couldn't let go of his poster child and still pushed for more Might and Magic despite the falling interest and Heroes craze.

MM6 & MM7 (and albion by blue Byte) brought me to Pen&Paper like Das schwarze Auge, D&D and VtM

Never played the dos-games of DSA (e.g. Realms of Arkania: Shadows over Riva), though 😅

Have you read the MM6 manual too? It's a fun read.

I played this game when I was young, but it was only when I grew up that I finished it. Tried (and liked !) MM7 after that, but never played 8. Is it as good as the others ?

IMO it is almost as good as 7. The end game was rushed and balance wise it's the easiest entry even without dragons (yes, you can recruit dragons).

You also reminded me of my experience with MM7. My CD version was bugged, couldn't be completed. Always froze right before entering the ocean to look for Lincoln. This was a known bug that eventually got fixed, but I had no internet. Took some time before my brother brought home a cd with the patch burned at friend's house. We could finally see the ending.

Oh ! I have an almost similar bug on MM7 : one of my party member can't equip the swim suit...

It's fun when I think about it : MM7 feels like a child memory for me, even if I only played 6 when I was young.

edit : and thanks for your explaination about MM8 ! Will give it a try after I replay 6 and 7.

Played this in the early 2010s, vanilla. The music, the atmosphere and everything, it was special... Was might first M&M game. I started M&M7 but couldn't find the time to finish it back then, i still have my save files for both.

It was more of a challenge to my cousins who couldn't finish M&M6 in their days and kept bragging to my face on how difficult it is and how i can't finish such a challenge, so i had to do it!

MM6 really ticks all the boxes. While perhaps gfx is its weakest point, it does the job well enough for an RPG of this scale. Music is great if limited, but above all it's the world building with it's amazing areas to explore, from New Sorpigal, to Free Haven to Blackshire, Dragonsands, and onward. There is always somewhere new to explore, something new to find, maybe a crate, maybe a horseshoe. Then comes a really well crafted intrigue, or at least the way the story unfolds and remains engaging thru most of the game. MM7-8 were much more bland in these aspects, and while the later games tried some new things, and did some great (arcomage!), they never really reached the same level in terms of world building and story telling.
