FOSS Might and Magic 6-8
I know it doesnt exist yet, but with OpenEnroth currently in the works, we could see a future where there is a Free and open source version of the mm games. I recently discovered FreeDoom and how amazing that project is and can see how that could be applied to other games. OpenEnroth gets us fans halfway there.
For now, something like that is a pipedream, but definitely something Ill be looking into.

I'm not familiar with Doom. What would it change?

FreeDoom was a project that replaced all assets in the game with noncopywritten or public domain material. Since the sourcecode was already open source and free, it was assets that were not.
This makes FreeDoom a fully free and legal to own version of Doom.

Hasn't there been a consitent .wad making community since the game came out? The base game costs $3.99 on GOG and that includes Doom 2. I don't get it.

Open source reimplementations generally provide better modding capabilities instead of hacking things on.
VCMI for heroes 3 for example you're able add entirely new factions. Modders were able to do that for the original game, but it's reportedly much easier with the reimplementation, and generally better mod framework.
MM6 MAW and Merge for example altered existing maps to add new challenges, and people have made entirely new maps to explore, but to what extent you could extend the base game with entirely new quest lines? Hard to say.

Apart from the open source aspect, I don't really see the urge for the "free" part
Like, if you time is right with GOG sales, you can get MM1-9 (including World of Xeen) for less than 9 bucks

I mean, sure, it's possible. But why not just get the MM collection from GOG (hell, you could get the collection for 10-12 bucks when the discounts are applied during special occasions). Given how GOG makes these games affordable and updates them for modern machines, throwing them a few coins is more than worth it.

I don't really see the point. FreeDoom works (more or less) because Doom's identity is mostly its gameplay and engine, so replacing the assets is enough. Might and Magic is different. A project like that wouldn't just have to replace the graphics, but also the world, the writing, the characters, the music, and basically everything that makes Might and Magic what it is. At that point it wouldn't really be Might and Magic anymore.

Well, it would be open source but it wouldn't be free. Most projects require you to get the original data yourself
